2018-03-05 07:19:12 PM ryork thats awesome
2018-03-05 07:19:35 PM karynbrinkley That is telling about what that population is going through
2018-03-05 07:20:21 PM karynbrinkley It is easy for residents to get depressed. They have given up a lot and transitioning is not easy at that age. it is hard at my age.
2018-03-05 07:20:57 PM ryork thats hard
2018-03-05 07:20:59 PM karynbrinkley So, tell me what you guys know about assisted living or maybe what you would like to know.
2018-03-05 07:21:07 PM yamaris2305 The most interesting thing is that they adapt everything they say to a simple way of understanding, since most of my residents have cognitive impairment, and are not so alert or do not understand so many things.
2018-03-05 07:21:21 PM karynbrinkley I was thinking today that this class changed my life. I was once in your seat.
2018-03-05 07:21:44 PM karynbrinkley That's nice yamaris2305
2018-03-05 07:21:48 PM kristenamrein I used to work with Assisted Living residents. They tended to be on the younger side and could do things more for themselves.
2018-03-05 07:22:04 PM karynbrinkley True kristen.
2018-03-05 07:22:26 PM karynbrinkley They are younger and more independent but need help with some of their adl's most of the time.
2018-03-05 07:22:29 PM kristenamrein I found I could do more with them, as they had more abilities.
2018-03-05 07:22:43 PM karynbrinkley that's true as well
2018-03-05 07:22:45 PM ryork with hospice going to assisted living faciity, the place where i volunteered have different types of residents, its really a challenge to do an activity
2018-03-05 07:23:09 PM karynbrinkley That can be true as well
2018-03-05 07:23:09 PM kristenamrein Some even taught me how to do things! I learned how to play Scrabble from one of the one on ones I had!
2018-03-05 07:23:34 PM ryork some of them are high functioning, others needed 1;1 activity
2018-03-05 07:23:57 PM karynbrinkley They all have the same admission requirements but this is when you start seeing more of a decline. They can age in place with hospice etc...
2018-03-05 07:24:01 PM ryork that actually inspires me to sign up for the class
2018-03-05 07:24:32 PM ryork true
2018-03-05 07:24:50 PM kristenamrein I've also found that they are in a better place in terms of being able to tell you what their needs are, rather than you having to guess what their needs are.
2018-03-05 07:25:09 PM karynbrinkley That's true
2018-03-05 07:25:26 PM yamaris2305 one to one visits are very useful for my residents who need more attention, so I can work with specific needs of them according to their condition.
2018-03-05 07:25:29 PM karynbrinkley there are signs of forgetfulness and other disease processes.
2018-03-05 07:25:40 PM ryork yes
2018-03-05 07:26:13 PM karynbrinkley Every assisted living is different
2018-03-05 07:26:18 PM ryork i have a resident right now that is very agressive and combative, its hard to do activity with her as well
2018-03-05 07:26:32 PM karynbrinkley Why is she having those behaviors?
2018-03-05 07:26:41 PM karynbrinkley Is it a UTI?
2018-03-05 07:26:54 PM karynbrinkley or is it dementia? Meds? disease?
2018-03-05 07:26:58 PM ryork no, she was admitted with that behavior
2018-03-05 07:27:10 PM ryork a combination of everything
2018-03-05 07:27:13 PM karynbrinkley Is she a risk to the other's?
2018-03-05 07:27:24 PM ryork often times
2018-03-05 07:27:33 PM karynbrinkley Are you in a memory care?
2018-03-05 07:27:39 PM ryork yes
2018-03-05 07:27:44 PM karynbrinkley Oh, ok
2018-03-05 07:27:46 PM ryork i am in memory care
2018-03-05 07:28:12 PM ryork is memory care different from assisted living?
2018-03-05 07:28:21 PM kristenamrein She may just be having trouble transitioning too. Think about it: once you move into a nursing home, you are told when you get your meds, who to sit with, you can't drive, etc. so her being combative may be a way to act out some sort of agression or fear.
2018-03-05 07:29:06 PM karynbrinkley It also takes redirection and some guess work to see if you can find the triggedr.
2018-03-05 07:29:09 PM yamaris2305 v
2018-03-05 07:29:12 PM yamaris2305 I have a resident who can only communicate through drawings or writing, and as he listens very well, I talk to him a lot, I ask him questions about his interests and although we do not do it, we spend very long periods communicating through drawings and writing . It is a question of adapting to everyone, knowing and understanding them
2018-03-05 07:29:22 PM karynbrinkley kristen is right in that it could be trasitioning
2018-03-05 07:29:36 PM ryork she came from nsf before and she always barricaeds herself with matress in her room, she is very scared
2018-03-05 07:29:40 PM karynbrinkley it could also be pain or another trigger
2018-03-05 07:29:41 PM ryork i feel for her
2018-03-05 07:29:53 PM karynbrinkley That makes sense
2018-03-05 07:30:12 PM karynbrinkley I have had a resident like that.
2018-03-05 07:30:23 PM ryork i hope it gets better in
2018-03-05 07:30:27 PM ryork for her
2018-03-05 07:30:41 PM kristenamrein She could also not be seeing things correctly either. Remember, it's all about perception: what we see as happening in reality, may not be what's happening in her reality.
2018-03-05 07:30:44 PM karynbrinkley You just try to soothe her and find something that makes her feel peaceful
2018-03-05 07:30:55 PM karynbrinkley true kristen
2018-03-05 07:31:02 PM ryork when she's medicated, she is the most sweetest person in building
2018-03-05 07:31:40 PM yamaris2305 I have a resident who is isolated because she says she sees ghosts, that there are some people that only she sees who bother her, for that reason she has stopped socializing with other residents and has stopped even eating
2018-03-05 07:31:55 PM karynbrinkley That's good that her meds are helping her. Hoping they can find a cure soon.
2018-03-05 07:32:25 PM ryork but even for her to take the meds is a struggle;(
2018-03-05 07:33:19 PM karynbrinkley She's afraid to take them?
2018-03-05 07:33:28 PM ryork yes
2018-03-05 07:34:04 PM kristenamrein Again, it's all about perception: she may not think that she needs the meds.
2018-03-05 07:34:07 PM karynbrinkley I have had similar residents yamaris2305
2018-03-05 07:34:24 PM ryork makes sense
2018-03-05 07:34:50 PM karynbrinkley She would hallucinate and had paranoia at night. Then she knocked on everybody's door and told them the building was on fire.
2018-03-05 07:35:06 PM karynbrinkley Eventually they got her meds right
2018-03-05 07:35:42 PM ryork thats what i am hoping that they would make her meds right
2018-03-05 07:35:49 PM karynbrinkley we moved her from assisted living where she ahd a 24 hour caregiver to memory and the environment waS less stimulating and so much better for her.
2018-03-05 07:35:55 PM karynbrinkley had
2018-03-05 07:36:38 PM karynbrinkley She stopped trying to leave the area and seemed more relaxed. The struggle was really the families.
2018-03-05 07:37:01 PM yamaris2305 in my activities department I had the residents make a circle with her in the center and everyone holding hands told her positive things about her, we expressed her because she is special, the good things she has, I made them all somehow leave her To know that she is very well cared for by all so that she does not feel afraid.
2018-03-05 07:37:19 PM kristenamrein Sometimes that's the best thing: my grandmother was Bipolar and as soon as she moved into a nursing home, she was never hospitalized for her Bipolar again.
2018-03-05 07:37:36 PM karynbrinkley Love it yamaris
2018-03-05 07:37:46 PM karynbrinkley Really kristen?
2018-03-05 07:37:50 PM ryork thats so nice
2018-03-05 07:37:51 PM karynbrinkley That is amazing
2018-03-05 07:38:48 PM kristenamrein Yes, they got her to take her medications properly once she was in there: it was a controlled environment, so she couldn't self-medicate.
2018-03-05 07:38:49 PM yamaris2305 The family has been very involved in their recovery process, they are more frequent and they help her eat. I also invite the prayer groups to a special part for her since it makes her feel more secure
2018-03-05 07:39:22 PM ryork thats awesome
2018-03-05 07:39:40 PM karynbrinkley That's very nice
2018-03-05 07:39:58 PM ryork it really make a big difference when family is fully supportive and involved in the process
2018-03-05 07:40:33 PM ryork and it helps the resident too, knowing that the family is there to support her
2018-03-05 07:40:50 PM karynbrinkley It is extremely important
2018-03-05 07:40:52 PM kristenamrein It really does: my family has been through it already three times, so I've seen it both from the family and the worker perspective
2018-03-05 07:41:12 PM karynbrinkley I could only imagine that i would feel abandoned.
2018-03-05 07:41:22 PM karynbrinkley me too Kristen
2018-03-05 07:41:34 PM karynbrinkley It is much harder when it's your family
2018-03-05 07:41:41 PM ryork yes it is
2018-03-05 07:42:51 PM kristenamrein That's why we always visited once a week and we always kept the lines of communication open with the Activities staff.
2018-03-05 07:43:29 PM karynbrinkley I like having family night and doing things that keeps the family involved
2018-03-05 07:44:08 PM karynbrinkley A lot of the families want that but you always have one or two that never come.
2018-03-05 07:44:23 PM ryork yes, we have that.....
2018-03-05 07:44:32 PM karynbrinkley for various reasons
2018-03-05 07:44:46 PM ryork they would suggest activities but they never shows up;)
2018-03-05 07:45:00 PM kristenamrein I always invite family into my activities. I've been placed in charge of the movies, and I never show something that I wouldn't show my niece. Some residents take their families to movie night, so I try to do family-friendly picks.
2018-03-05 07:45:46 PM ryork they love movie nights
2018-03-05 07:46:06 PM karynbrinkley we are builidng a new community with a movie theater
2018-03-05 07:46:11 PM ryork we want to recreate a drive-in movie sometimes
2018-03-05 07:46:15 PM kristenamrein Lucky!
2018-03-05 07:46:17 PM ryork thats cool
2018-03-05 07:46:22 PM ryork wow
2018-03-05 07:46:33 PM karynbrinkley You mad me think that it will be nice to invite families
2018-03-05 07:46:45 PM karynbrinkley made
2018-03-05 07:46:51 PM karynbrinkley lol, my typing
2018-03-05 07:46:54 PM ryork families will love it and the residents
2018-03-05 07:47:07 PM ryork thats ok, its monday haha
2018-03-05 07:47:11 PM kristenamrein I always bring in my own movies: I have literally thousands of them to choose from and I have very strict criteria for my choices.
2018-03-05 07:48:12 PM karynbrinkley What is working well with your programming?
2018-03-05 07:51:08 PM kristenamrein Musicals! My residents love them and I own at least 100 of them. They also like romantic comedies, remakes of classic movies, classic movies, or movies that are throwbacks to the classic style. I always tie them in to whatever is going on around us. For instance, with the Olympics, we watched "Cool Runnings" (about the Jamacian Bobsled Team), "Miracle" (US Hockey Team),and" The Cutting Edge" (Pairs Figure Skating). I now have "Eddie The Eagle" (about the first Ski Jumper from Britian) to add to that list.
2018-03-05 07:51:37 PM ryork thats awesome
2018-03-05 07:51:40 PM michellelheldt enter the chat room
2018-03-05 07:51:46 PM karynbrinkley Very good!
2018-03-05 07:51:49 PM karynbrinkley Love it!
2018-03-05 07:52:36 PM kristenamrein I also have holiday ones like "Easter Parade", "Finian's Rainbow" (St. Patty's Day), "Yankee Doodle Dandy", and "Miracle On 34th Street".
2018-03-05 07:52:58 PM karynbrinkley I'm sure they love it.
2018-03-05 07:53:22 PM kristenamrein They do...they watch "Miracle On 34th Street" every year now on Thanksgiving!
2018-03-05 07:53:23 PM ryork we have a dance instructor who come to the facility once a month and the resident love it, we even have families to come and enjoy it too
2018-03-05 07:53:52 PM michellelheldt left the chat room
2018-03-05 07:53:58 PM ryork the staff are also involved in it
2018-03-05 07:54:24 PM karynbrinkley Do they all dance with the instructor?
2018-03-05 07:54:39 PM ryork even the ones that do not have interst in dancing is enjoying it
2018-03-05 07:54:59 PM karynbrinkley I love that idea. We did a line dance class once but some tried to dance from their chairs
2018-03-05 07:55:19 PM ryork the DI tried to dance with everyone of them
2018-03-05 07:55:39 PM ryork we encourage the staff to dance with the residents
2018-03-05 07:55:47 PM karynbrinkley So swett
2018-03-05 07:55:52 PM karynbrinkley sweet
2018-03-05 07:56:18 PM karynbrinkley It is almost time to go so I want to make sure and ask any questions you may have?
2018-03-05 07:56:23 PM karynbrinkley answer
2018-03-05 07:56:23 PM kristenamrein My guys love to dance. I do a "Morning Round Up" program I put on upbeat music. If they are really tired and don't want to do a game, I'll take their hands and dance to the music with them.
2018-03-05 07:56:25 PM ryork the ones that cant stand, the mere fact that they are tapping their feet or clapping their hands , for me that is a success
2018-03-05 07:56:40 PM karynbrinkley That is a success
2018-03-05 07:56:58 PM karynbrinkley awwww, Kristen
2018-03-05 07:57:18 PM ryork thats so sweet
2018-03-05 07:57:28 PM karynbrinkley I remember my first job. We did an exercise class every morning.
