2018-04-02 06:01:42 PM karynbrinkley Are you mepap 1 or 2?
2018-04-02 06:02:12 PM karynbrinkley Hopefully we will have more students show up?
2018-04-02 06:02:57 PM scarvalho09 it is going well im at MEPAP1 has been very informative. I know the midterm packets are due tonight maybe they are revising and turning them in
2018-04-02 06:03:45 PM karynbrinkley Oh, maybe so. I remember all that work. You are right, it is so informative.
2018-04-02 06:03:52 PM karynbrinkley I loved the regulations
2018-04-02 06:04:08 PM karynbrinkley Mepap 2 was much easier.
2018-04-02 06:04:47 PM karynbrinkley In a sense thay it's about management tools and marketing. I just love the regs and it is so important.
2018-04-02 06:05:11 PM karynbrinkley Where do you work? What kind of community?
2018-04-02 06:06:51 PM scarvalho09 Thats a relief was very nervous about taking MEPAP 2. I work in a nursing and rehab center we have a 76 bed capacity. I love my job and have always had a passion for working with the elderly hbu
2018-04-02 06:08:20 PM karynbrinkley I am an executive director in a stand alone assisted living and memory care that will be licensed for 99. I do startup operations and open communities from the ground up. I stated in activities and loved it so I kept expanding.
2018-04-02 06:08:30 PM karynbrinkley started
2018-04-02 06:08:56 PM karynbrinkley This class changed my life
2018-04-02 06:09:38 PM scarvalho09 Thats soo amazing! :) Congrats on all of your success!!
2018-04-02 06:10:11 PM karynbrinkley It seems like the path just kept unfolding
2018-04-02 06:10:27 PM karynbrinkley Are you familiar with the ALF?
2018-04-02 06:11:31 PM scarvalho09 A little my mother worked in one and i volunteered as a teen.
2018-04-02 06:12:20 PM scarvalho09 I also visited 1 for one of my assiments they are great and offer soo much for the residents
2018-04-02 06:12:50 PM karynbrinkley The residents are higher functioning in need os different levels of assistance. From med management to assistance with showers.
2018-04-02 06:12:57 PM karynbrinkley of
2018-04-02 06:14:43 PM scarvalho09 they do need to be able to walk alone though? correct?
2018-04-02 06:15:40 PM karynbrinkley Yes, they have tons of different activities from lunch and theater outings to musical entertainment, trivia, exercise, and of course a lot of them love bingo. They can walk using a walker.
2018-04-02 06:16:18 PM karynbrinkley They can get assistance transferring
2018-04-02 06:17:24 PM karynbrinkley I had a lady with a scooter and she could transfer using that. It got to the point that the staff started lifting her because she had a degenerative disorder. They discharged her. asaratee
2018-04-02 06:17:53 PM karynbrinkley It is a risk to the staff and our policy stated we were a no lift facility.
2018-04-02 06:18:47 PM karynbrinkley The Florida regs state that you have to be able to transfer with assistance.
2018-04-02 06:18:54 PM karynbrinkley What about your state?
2018-04-02 06:20:01 PM scarvalho09 I beleive it is the same because that is one of the questions i asked the activity director during my visit
2018-04-02 06:20:20 PM scarvalho09 I just noticed the extra credit chat isnt until wednesday
2018-04-02 06:20:27 PM scarvalho09 Hello everyone! Earn extra credit for one hour participation in chat to learn something new about Alzheimer's/dementia. The session is fun and questions are welcome! We meet this month on Wednesday (4/04) @ 8:00 p.m. E.S.T. in the Specialty Chat Room - see you there! Celeste Chase, ACC, CDP
2018-04-02 06:20:35 PM karynbrinkley This is extra credit
2018-04-02 06:21:01 PM karynbrinkley That is another class focused on dementia.
2018-04-02 06:21:32 PM scarvalho09 The topic on this is ALFs? Im soo sorry i do appologize how embaressing
2018-04-02 06:21:41 PM karynbrinkley I hate nobody is here. Maybe they will still show up. If not, you get a 1:1.
2018-04-02 06:22:15 PM scarvalho09 Which is a great oppurtunity that doesnt happen very often
2018-04-02 06:22:16 PM karynbrinkley No worries! It's confusing at first. there are three extra credit classes and topics.
2018-04-02 06:22:53 PM karynbrinkley So true. Sometimes it's so crowded that it's hard to keep up.
2018-04-02 06:23:12 PM karynbrinkley What made you want to get certified?
2018-04-02 06:25:45 PM scarvalho09 so true im not a very good typer but i do my best and am getting better thanks to this class! i have been an activity aid for about 81/2 years and wanted to look into becoming the director because i love to organize events and decorate and see what residents are enjoying at this momment. I was offered the Director position last june found the online class and the rest will be history i love being able to take online classes!!
2018-04-02 06:26:47 PM scarvalho09 At first i was soo NERVOUS! but it became easier as time went on and it helps that i know a lot of the curriculum :)
2018-04-02 06:27:39 PM karynbrinkley It does. I loved it as well.
2018-04-02 06:28:31 PM karynbrinkley Do you have assistants?
2018-04-02 06:28:46 PM karynbrinkley Or volunteers?
2018-04-02 06:29:20 PM karynbrinkley This course really gives you a lot of ideas that you can implement at your community.
2018-04-02 06:30:10 PM scarvalho09 I have 3 1 full time and 2 part time which is helpful i have read other students dont have any help! no volunteers at this time. Indeed some of these ideas i would have never thought of and Kathy is a great help!
2018-04-02 06:32:17 PM karynbrinkley Kathy is great and I love the ideas you can get from the group. You are fortunate to have the assitants. The SNF has more positions and they salary is generally hirer.
2018-04-02 06:32:51 PM scarvalho09 WOW really i never knew that!!
2018-04-02 06:33:02 PM karynbrinkley There is a need for mrow 1:1 engagement and the medicare brings in more money.
2018-04-02 06:33:09 PM karynbrinkley more 1:1's
2018-04-02 06:33:38 PM karynbrinkley It's scrutinized more by the state and there's more careplanning.
2018-04-02 06:34:25 PM scarvalho09 yes def a lot of 1 on 1 care luckily Hospice helps a lot with that with residents recieving hospice servicees but i still need to make time
2018-04-02 06:34:43 PM scarvalho09 It can be challenging but yet so rewarding!!
2018-04-02 06:35:11 PM karynbrinkley Does your hospice group do music visits, pet visits, and art 1:1's for their residents?
2018-04-02 06:36:16 PM karynbrinkley Sometimes it their resident wants to come out, they will play the guitar or do pet visits for a whole group.
2018-04-02 06:36:17 PM scarvalho09 yes they offer 1on1 compainionship, pet therapy, reading, music, twiddle muffs, doll therapy nail care and beauty
2018-04-02 06:36:28 PM karynbrinkley Awesome
2018-04-02 06:36:32 PM karynbrinkley That's nice
2018-04-02 06:36:45 PM scarvalho09 Yes they luckily share the pet therapy which we all love so very much
2018-04-02 06:37:11 PM scarvalho09 i looked into a zoo visit but it was too expensive for my budget
2018-04-02 06:37:24 PM karynbrinkley What about a wildlife group?
2018-04-02 06:37:39 PM karynbrinkley I had somebody bring owls, eagles etc...
2018-04-02 06:38:04 PM karynbrinkley Ripleys aquarium will bring small animals
2018-04-02 06:38:21 PM scarvalho09 Ive never heard of any in my area i will have to research a bit. I am also looking into nursing home week activities want it to be diffrent not just music
2018-04-02 06:38:34 PM karynbrinkley They have an outreach programs and colleges do too.
2018-04-02 06:39:18 PM scarvalho09 I will def look into outreach programs in my area thank you for sharing that :)
2018-04-02 06:39:44 PM karynbrinkley Is there a theme this year for nursing home week?
2018-04-02 06:40:27 PM scarvalho09 Yes celebrating Life Storys :)
2018-04-02 06:40:35 PM karynbrinkley I would google it. I haven't thought about that in a while but we would think up funny activities and build relationships with staff and residnets.
2018-04-02 06:40:48 PM karynbrinkley That's a great theme
2018-04-02 06:40:54 PM karynbrinkley Wow
2018-04-02 06:41:03 PM karynbrinkley You can do a lot with
2018-04-02 06:42:44 PM karynbrinkley You could record residents telling their life stories for their families to one day keep. You could make art that would tell a part of the life story. I woul look on pinterest.
2018-04-02 06:42:53 PM karynbrinkley That would be a lot of fun,
2018-04-02 06:43:37 PM karynbrinkley You could make a board with old pics and leave it all week and let people who is who. We did that with veterans as well.
2018-04-02 06:43:39 PM scarvalho09 thats a wonderful idea! :) I LOVE pinterest and luckily other facilitys in m area are also healpful
2018-04-02 06:43:51 PM karynbrinkley So true
2018-04-02 06:44:29 PM scarvalho09 I would like to work together with other facilitys this summer and do picnics in the local park
2018-04-02 06:46:09 PM scarvalho09 I believe we should all work together instead of being in competition which it sometimes feels like
2018-04-02 06:46:47 PM karynbrinkley I agree
2018-04-02 06:47:43 PM scarvalho09 Is this the first 1 on1 chat you have ever done i know it is mine
2018-04-02 06:48:15 PM karynbrinkley You can partner with an ALF. That way if people decline, they will feed your community and if your residents improve in the rehab, they can go to the ALF. Same for memory care.
2018-04-02 06:48:26 PM karynbrinkley This is the first time but it's nice
2018-04-02 06:49:00 PM karynbrinkley I guess you are correct that everybody is turning in their homework.
2018-04-02 06:49:55 PM scarvalho09 Thats a great idea i should reach out to other local facilities and do vists bring in goodies ! I love marketing and helping out the facility i work in! I luckily turned it all in yesterday so i wouldnt have to worry about it today and tood the test on friday was a little tricky word wise
2018-04-02 06:51:29 PM karynbrinkley Congrats!
2018-04-02 06:51:34 PM karynbrinkley That's great
2018-04-02 06:51:41 PM scarvalho09 Thanks! :)
2018-04-02 06:52:49 PM karynbrinkley you are helping your community but it's good for the residents who may need to come to your community. They will already know you and some of the residents.
2018-04-02 06:53:24 PM karynbrinkley We had picnics and pool parties
2018-04-02 06:53:28 PM karynbrinkley Luncheons
2018-04-02 06:53:42 PM karynbrinkley You can get invoved with church groups too
2018-04-02 06:54:23 PM scarvalho09 I have done a few luncheaons which are wondeful! That is another great idea my residents would love that!!!
2018-04-02 06:54:51 PM karynbrinkley I had a group of ladies who would come to my community weekly and spend from 10am until noon. They would do crafts etc and bring all the supplies.
2018-04-02 06:55:07 PM karynbrinkley They were from a church
2018-04-02 06:55:38 PM karynbrinkley The master gardeners association will come out and help with a raised bed garden or project.
2018-04-02 06:56:17 PM karynbrinkley Sometimes they do educational presentations about flower containers in the rooms.
2018-04-02 06:57:02 PM scarvalho09 :D All these wonderful ideas!!
2018-04-02 06:57:32 PM scarvalho09 I def need to reach out more and get more volunteers and free programs
2018-04-02 06:58:01 PM scarvalho09 My resdients love to try out new programs
2018-04-02 06:58:43 PM karynbrinkley Awwww. I love it. We have extraordinary outings twice a year. It's a trip to Disney or something amazing depending on the residents history and prefernce.
2018-04-02 06:58:54 PM karynbrinkley preference
2018-04-02 06:59:01 PM karynbrinkley It's sometimes overnight
2018-04-02 06:59:30 PM scarvalho09 (y) Think i need to come check out some of the facilities in Fl
2018-04-02 07:00:22 PM karynbrinkley Some residents who were pilots in the war will be able to go up in a plane and fly with another pilot. You do need to come visit. Let me know when you travel to Orlando. :) We are out of time already. That flew by.
2018-04-02 07:01:11 PM scarvalho09 indeed it did thank you soo much for not caneling the chat i appriciate it and your time you were very helpful and i learned a lot of new things
2018-04-02 07:01:50 PM karynbrinkley Thank you so much for coming. I hope you did learn something new. I love that feeling of sharing information for the good of what we do.
2018-04-02 07:02:10 PM karynbrinkley A pleasure to meet you.
2018-04-02 07:02:44 PM scarvalho09 :) Have a wonderful rest of the week i will def be at the next xrta credit chat! nice to meet you as well
