2020-07-13 07:04:56 PM jillh No, this is a MDS 3.0 discussion
2020-07-13 07:05:08 PM erinm1 hello
2020-07-13 07:05:26 PM jillh I truly never had! I always just look under medical diagnoses
2020-07-13 07:05:40 PM jillh In a residents chart
2020-07-13 07:05:54 PM jillh We are in PCC as well
2020-07-13 07:05:54 PM gracepadua I think I looked at it when I took MEPAP Part 1
2020-07-13 07:06:15 PM heidimilesmetcalfe North Carolina does use FL2 form
2020-07-13 07:06:39 PM lbaker1989 left the chat room
2020-07-13 07:06:43 PM jillh Well, the section is section I
2020-07-13 07:06:47 PM careyjeff chart face sheets or on pcc section 1
2020-07-13 07:07:35 PM careyjeff Wjho does the diagnosis?
2020-07-13 07:07:47 PM jillh The part that I would look at the most I think is the psychiatric/Mood Disorder
2020-07-13 07:08:17 PM jillh All the information is put into the MDS from information in a residents chart
2020-07-13 07:08:43 PM careyjeff but who decides the diagnosis
2020-07-13 07:08:58 PM brittanyanne24 physian, physician assistant, Nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialisy
2020-07-13 07:09:04 PM jillh The MD
2020-07-13 07:09:08 PM careyjeff awesome
2020-07-13 07:09:45 PM jillh We have an "MDS" team that puts all the info into an MDS.
2020-07-13 07:09:51 PM careyjeff how bout some common diagnosis?
2020-07-13 07:10:12 PM heidimilesmetcalfe Dementia
2020-07-13 07:10:21 PM jillh The activities department is responsible to complete section F, but thats another discussion! LOL
2020-07-13 07:10:27 PM heidimilesmetcalfe Most common in elderly
2020-07-13 07:10:53 PM brittanyanne24 a common diagnosis ia a UTI
2020-07-13 07:11:13 PM jillh depression and anxiety
2020-07-13 07:11:55 PM careyjeff keep coming with them. Think about your residents and where you work. Who works in aSNF?
2020-07-13 07:12:26 PM jillh I do. I also work rehab and independent and assisted
2020-07-13 07:12:39 PM careyjeff ok think rehab
2020-07-13 07:12:51 PM jillh Arthritis, DM
2020-07-13 07:12:51 PM gracepadua Assisted Living/Memory Care
2020-07-13 07:13:02 PM erinm1 I work in a SNF
2020-07-13 07:13:02 PM brittanyanne24 long term care
2020-07-13 07:13:18 PM careyjeff broken bones?
2020-07-13 07:13:31 PM jillh LTC, is it a mixed group of residents?
2020-07-13 07:13:33 PM careyjeff IV therapy?
2020-07-13 07:13:39 PM brittanyanne24 yes
2020-07-13 07:14:01 PM careyjeff CHF?
2020-07-13 07:14:01 PM erinm1 our therapy department gets mostly hip and knee replacements
2020-07-13 07:14:08 PM brittanyanne24 osteoporosis and arthritis
2020-07-13 07:14:19 PM gracepadua Broken hips
2020-07-13 07:14:24 PM careyjeff ok so name the diagnosis
2020-07-13 07:14:25 PM gracepadua UTI
2020-07-13 07:14:53 PM jillh What do you mean the diagnosis?
2020-07-13 07:15:37 PM jillh What does everyone think you would use this MDS section for?
2020-07-13 07:16:09 PM gracepadua Modifying the care plan?
2020-07-13 07:16:17 PM careyjeff name a residents primary diagnois. EX. broken hip uti dementia, infection>>>>>
2020-07-13 07:16:38 PM brittanyanne24 to check if there is any changes or new diagnosis especially if i noticed a diffrence in that resident
2020-07-13 07:16:58 PM careyjeff how many day look back?
2020-07-13 07:17:10 PM jillh Sure! It helps to identify if a resident needs interventions put into place and/or modifications to their activity plan
2020-07-13 07:18:14 PM jillh If someone had a CVA with Hemi, you would plan to place items on the non-affected side.
2020-07-13 07:18:21 PM gracepadua That's what I meant. To check if the care plan has been modified to plan activities accordingly
2020-07-13 07:19:00 PM jillh You are right!
2020-07-13 07:19:15 PM gracepadua http://www.activitydirectorsnetwork.com/images/QISMovie/QISMovie_controller.swf
2020-07-13 07:19:39 PM gracepadua I checked the activitydirector.net site and they say that Kathy Hughes made this presentation about MDS back in 2011
2020-07-13 07:20:30 PM gracepadua Oops, should have tried to open the file first. My bad. At least my comp won't open. Sorry.
2020-07-13 07:20:32 PM jillh If someone has an active diagnosis of related to Psychiatric/Mood Disorder, you need to put an intervention in place before they are be medicated.
2020-07-13 07:21:05 PM gracepadua Yes.
2020-07-13 07:21:10 PM jillh Thank you for sharing that! I will have to check it out!
2020-07-13 07:21:18 PM careyjeff True
2020-07-13 07:21:30 PM heidimilesmetcalfe Yes@jilh
2020-07-13 07:22:10 PM brittanyanne24 of course because you always want to try an activity before the medication
2020-07-13 07:22:13 PM erinm1 thanks for sharing, ill check that out
2020-07-13 07:22:43 PM jillh Yes, activities is a very important part of their lives
2020-07-13 07:23:05 PM careyjeff Im 65 yo with a broken hip and depression . I love the yankees and being out side. Care plan me
2020-07-13 07:23:27 PM careyjeff and I love old rock from the 60s 70s 80s
2020-07-13 07:23:50 PM gracepadua Outing to a Yankees game if possible. Or hire a live musician to play music at a happy hour from those eras
2020-07-13 07:24:05 PM gracepadua But with a broken hip might not be up for an outing
2020-07-13 07:24:29 PM jillh Engaging residents in activities they enjoy helps to reduce stress, anxiety and decreases undesireable behaviors.
2020-07-13 07:24:31 PM brittanyanne24 make sure you have a CD player so you could lsiten to your favorite music
2020-07-13 07:24:38 PM careyjeff pt 5 days aweek
2020-07-13 07:24:47 PM gracepadua So from their hospital bed in their room provide sensory activities to mimic a Yankees game in his room
2020-07-13 07:25:10 PM heidimilesmetcalfe What kind of activities you guys do?
2020-07-13 07:25:21 PM jillh Put in a yankees DVD or YOUTUBE a game!
2020-07-13 07:25:44 PM gracepadua Listen to Take Me Out to the Ballgame, serve hotdogs or other baseball game snacks
2020-07-13 07:25:52 PM jillh Serve pop corn and beer!
2020-07-13 07:25:59 PM erinm1 we actually have a one on one baseball game but i would also make sure sports channels are available as well. live music and maybe socials
2020-07-13 07:26:09 PM gracepadua You could get a fan going to make it seem windy if he doesn't mind it
2020-07-13 07:26:19 PM brittanyanne24 Right now ith Covid 19 it is a little hard but i do a lot of one on one crafts, hall way bingo or have the residents write a story by going room to room and getting the next sentence
2020-07-13 07:27:03 PM gracepadua I've been going room to room playing ukulele and singing with them
2020-07-13 07:27:36 PM jillh Nice gracepadua!
2020-07-13 07:27:40 PM erinm1 thats cool. my facility is still not allowing any group activities. not even hallway bingo
2020-07-13 07:27:42 PM careyjeff my RX is dementia. My family lives far away. Im female 78yo I used to make dresses. Careplan me
2020-07-13 07:28:09 PM gracepadua We had our "Meadowood Market" the other day and pushed around a cart full of things they could "buy" with their Meadow Money which they receive when they come to a group activity or a 1:1 activitiy. They miss going shopping so this was fun for them to pick things out they liked
2020-07-13 07:28:32 PM brittanyanne24 Thats a great idea
2020-07-13 07:28:35 PM careyjeff Cool idea Grace
2020-07-13 07:28:43 PM erinm1 great idea!
2020-07-13 07:28:49 PM jillh Thats what we do too! they spend Baker bucks!
2020-07-13 07:28:52 PM gracepadua Thanks! It was fun
2020-07-13 07:29:05 PM careyjeff ok on task lol
2020-07-13 07:29:19 PM careyjeff Cheers by the way
2020-07-13 07:29:26 PM gracepadua We usually have a store setup in the parlour every 2 months but since covid they havent spent any "money" in like 5 months
2020-07-13 07:29:32 PM jillh We give out the baker bucks in their birthday cards. They can't wait to spend them!
2020-07-13 07:29:58 PM gracepadua So for the dementia resident... Paper dolls picking out dresses for the dolls and Facetime or Zoom with her family might be good
2020-07-13 07:30:06 PM brittanyanne24 since the family lives far away maybe set up phone calls or zoom calls
2020-07-13 07:30:21 PM careyjeff nice grace. Paper dolls
2020-07-13 07:30:26 PM gracepadua Maybe go through a vintage fashion magazine
2020-07-13 07:30:27 PM erinm1 i would keep different fabrics of different textures for sensory
2020-07-13 07:30:32 PM brittanyanne24 yes doll dresses or diffrent types of fabrics
2020-07-13 07:30:35 PM gracepadua Yes sensory
2020-07-13 07:30:51 PM careyjeff how bout a baby to dress up?
2020-07-13 07:31:10 PM gracepadua I feel iffy about that one
2020-07-13 07:31:11 PM careyjeff or a barbie if my dexterity is good enough
2020-07-13 07:31:43 PM careyjeff IFFY ABOUT?
2020-07-13 07:32:25 PM gracepadua We have a therapy baby but we keep it swaddled so that they arent asking why it's not moving. Because they think she's real. If they were to dress the doll, I would want to make sure they knew it was a doll. One time I heard of dementia residents who played with dolls and one resident thought the baby had died because it wasn't moving. I'm always paranoid that's going to happen lol
2020-07-13 07:32:45 PM jillh Get various material/fabrics, put together a sensory box with seamstess stuff (safe of course)
2020-07-13 07:32:50 PM bstewart enter the chat room
2020-07-13 07:32:59 PM gracepadua Yeah like a barbie might work if she had the dexterity
2020-07-13 07:33:05 PM brittanyanne24 we used to have baby dolls but they would fight over them so we had to take them away
2020-07-13 07:33:10 PM gracepadua Good idea jill
2020-07-13 07:34:06 PM erinm1 unless requested by family, we do not use dolls or stuffed animals.
2020-07-13 07:34:10 PM jillh I have baby cloths in a laundry basket to fold and the ladies love going thru the cloths!
2020-07-13 07:34:14 PM ryann enter the chat room
2020-07-13 07:34:29 PM brittanyanne24 yes i have a few ladies that love to fold the laundry
2020-07-13 07:34:50 PM gracepadua I've worked for places that had a strict no doll policy. Folding laundry is great. and washing dishes
2020-07-13 07:34:52 PM jillh oopps! I meant to say clothes! LOL
2020-07-13 07:35:03 PM careyjeff instead of letting me sew. How bout velcro?
2020-07-13 07:35:07 PM erinm1 we have a hamper of laundry and a set of plasic dishes that residents can wash
2020-07-13 07:35:16 PM brittanyanne24 velcro is a good idea
2020-07-13 07:35:18 PM gracepadua Or buttons
2020-07-13 07:35:23 PM ryann left the chat room
2020-07-13 07:35:30 PM gracepadua velcro easier though
2020-07-13 07:35:38 PM erinm1 velcro and buttons are great for sensory
2020-07-13 07:36:16 PM careyjeff Dolls are ok as long as careplanned
2020-07-13 07:36:18 PM bstewart Hello everyone sorry i'm late entering the conversation

2020-07-13 07:46:47 PM brittanyanne24 It makes things harder but im doing the best to keep the residents engaged
2020-07-13 07:47:03 PM erinm1 hard on the residents too
2020-07-13 07:47:10 PM gracepadua We just got our first case last week, they tested us all today. Morale is low.
2020-07-13 07:47:12 PM bstewart Starting to run out of things to do that keeps them interested
2020-07-13 07:47:39 PM brittanyanne24 we just started visitations which is really nice for the residents it is outside and 6 feet apart with a mask
2020-07-13 07:47:44 PM gracepadua It's been so hard. We're all burned out and stressed. The resident are pissed but hopefully it has been contained
2020-07-13 07:47:45 PM careyjeff What do yall do for your difficult residents?
2020-07-13 07:48:16 PM bstewart its also hard on the residents not being able to see their family
2020-07-13 07:48:25 PM gracepadua Paro seal therapy helps with one of our most violent residents. So does doll therapy
2020-07-13 07:48:42 PM brittanyanne24 give them one on one time talk to them try to see if i can find something they enjoy
2020-07-13 07:48:58 PM bstewart exercises chair workouts work well as well as music
2020-07-13 07:49:11 PM gracepadua I read poetry or walk with them in the courtyard to get some fresh air when it's not too hot
2020-07-13 07:49:14 PM brittanyanne24 music is also a big help
2020-07-13 07:49:17 PM gracepadua with masks on of course
2020-07-13 07:49:37 PM jillh Yes. One idea our residents liked! We taped up a candy bingo board (paper) and each day we would pull out the candy of choice and the residents looked on their boards in their rooms to see if they had it! When they went bingo, we got them a candy of choice from the dollar store.
2020-07-13 07:49:40 PM bstewart Music is always my number 1 go to
2020-07-13 07:49:40 PM brittanyanne24 yes getting someone outide for a few minutes can make a huge difrence
2020-07-13 07:49:51 PM gracepadua Sometimes I think my difficult residents just need time alone in their room. They have behaviors sometimes bc they're over-stimulated
2020-07-13 07:50:09 PM bstewart I did find that the game the price is right helps too
2020-07-13 07:50:21 PM eckhartdanielle enter the chat room

2020-07-13 07:51:31 PM brittanyanne24 We have people come in to do pet therapy
2020-07-13 07:51:31 PM gracepadua That's fun. When my residents are difficult they will not play a game. They are likely to want to "work", move furniture around, arrange silverware, fold laundry etc
2020-07-13 07:51:56 PM eckhartdanielle Does anyone know if the students who were switched to this program from an at your "Own Pace program" are still able to go at their own pace? I called the ADN support number and they told me yes but I don't know if that's true
