2020-07-16 07:14:12 PM erica Yes since Covid i find that residents are very depressed and not wanting to participate in activity like they usally does .
2020-07-16 07:14:15 PM 219999 at my job we do face time so thhey can see there family
2020-07-16 07:14:15 PM dianemgonzalez Depression is huge in our facility right now
2020-07-16 07:14:20 PM paula12 i also do zoom visits and facetime which is a big help
2020-07-16 07:14:29 PM stargie69 in my facility family outside residents window
2020-07-16 07:14:33 PM bethaldrich5 Yes depression is a big one for us right now. Even though most of our residents understand what is happening, and we connect them with outside visits and face time.
2020-07-16 07:14:50 PM racheldonohoue Reminiscing is great!
2020-07-16 07:14:51 PM sandishell19 We do face book messenger, google duo and facetime
2020-07-16 07:14:55 PM tshaw yes it is paula, the resident who have been in the facility a long time think it new and they love it
2020-07-16 07:14:59 PM 219999 we also call family and give them up dates on there love one as well
2020-07-16 07:15:04 PM brittanyanne24 i think it is a lot harder on the residents who don't understand what is going on
2020-07-16 07:15:06 PM cmckinny does anyone have a full time phych service in their building, now because of this virus, all our residents are on phych for depression.
2020-07-16 07:15:18 PM erica I think my computer is acting up im seeing comments very late
2020-07-16 07:15:35 PM tshaw our psych service see patient virtually
2020-07-16 07:15:38 PM lstokes A lot of residents are expericening depression
2020-07-16 07:15:49 PM 219999 ye its a lot harder on those who dont understand
2020-07-16 07:15:55 PM paula12 we have a psych dr come in every day
2020-07-16 07:16:06 PM feliciasuominen So do we
2020-07-16 07:16:08 PM sandishell19 Our doctors are doing telavisits
2020-07-16 07:16:12 PM laceyh22 but we have noticed that behaviors have been a lot less mild without families visiting and we haven't been able to figure out why.
2020-07-16 07:16:16 PM lstokes this may be brought by the isolation because of Covid19
2020-07-16 07:16:46 PM laceyh22 perhaps having families come in to the building and then they leave, which upsets them? we just can't figure that out
2020-07-16 07:16:55 PM cmckinny depression equals sleeping alot
2020-07-16 07:17:09 PM 219999 yes thats true
2020-07-16 07:17:12 PM lstokes That is very interesting lacey22
2020-07-16 07:17:15 PM sandishell19 We are doing online church services
2020-07-16 07:17:18 PM tshaw at the facility..it actually has we have to make sure it is documentated of all behaviors and in counters
2020-07-16 07:17:31 PM susandziegenbein Would you suppose going to their original resident intake form and learning about thier likes/dislikes hobbies and various interests would help when you do one on one visits to help them combat their depression. Getting them to do the things that personally interest them would be beneficial?
2020-07-16 07:17:38 PM laceyh22 inside, our residents haven't been isolated at all. it's impossible. too many wanderers.
2020-07-16 07:17:38 PM paula12 we are experiencing some behaviors because of the residents being boreed
2020-07-16 07:17:41 PM 219999 i didnt not know that until today
2020-07-16 07:17:48 PM bethaldrich5 We have actually found a similar trend. We were able to start our outside socially distanced familiy visits. And there are a lot of behaviors/confusion after.
2020-07-16 07:18:28 PM laceyh22 thank you for sharing, beth!! helps to feel we aren't so alone
2020-07-16 07:18:29 PM terrycierra being in FL everything is shut down completely for us
2020-07-16 07:18:50 PM tshaw some times cause our family was really involved now they are no so much here in Texas
2020-07-16 07:18:51 PM erica What do everyone thinks about an rotation of having the residents in the dinging room for activities 6 feet distance.
2020-07-16 07:18:53 PM racheldonohoue I currently am not working in a facility, but I can imagine that the lack of seeing families is very confusing and distressing for the residents.
2020-07-16 07:19:11 PM terrycierra activities in rooms right now
2020-07-16 07:19:28 PM susandziegenbein I don't work in a facility either. Trying to learn a new field of work

2020-07-16 07:19:37 PM brittanyanne24 we are doing a rotation for outside time 3 residents at a time
2020-07-16 07:19:38 PM tshaw acitivites in rooms...hall bingo and
2020-07-16 07:19:38 PM laceyh22 sorry to get us off topic again - we were discussing diagnoses for the MDS
2020-07-16 07:19:52 PM paula12 we go outsside whenever possible which also helps
2020-07-16 07:19:52 PM terrycierra dementia
2020-07-16 07:19:53 PM cmckinny all activites in room now and door must be closed, that upsets them the most
2020-07-16 07:20:00 PM dianemgonzalez We try to do small group activities maintaining distance
2020-07-16 07:20:18 PM tshaw are there any other question about mds
2020-07-16 07:20:19 PM sandishell19 We have suggested doing bingo outside in groups of ten, our adminastrator said no
2020-07-16 07:20:21 PM lstokes Have everyone been able to find a copy of the MDS 3.0 List of Active Diagnosis? If so where is it found. Please share for your classmates

2020-07-16 07:22:53 PM erica yes
2020-07-16 07:23:07 PM bethaldrich5 One of the topics to discuss was the benefits of the MDS list of active diagnosis.
2020-07-16 07:23:11 PM racheldonohoue What are some things to do with Parkinsons?
2020-07-16 07:23:45 PM terrycierra therapy
2020-07-16 07:23:46 PM laceyh22 parkinsons tend to shake - so we do weighted bracelets during activities
2020-07-16 07:24:05 PM erica Excersice
2020-07-16 07:24:17 PM lstokes Yes bethaldrich5 that question was already asked but you can still give your answer!
2020-07-16 07:24:36 PM terrycierra we have a lot of glaucome and macular degeneration too
2020-07-16 07:25:17 PM paula12 we have alot of mental diagnois in our facility
2020-07-16 07:25:19 PM cmckinny speach also has to be involved with parkinsons, due to swallowing
2020-07-16 07:25:29 PM stargie69 thats true
2020-07-16 07:25:37 PM tshaw very true
2020-07-16 07:25:42 PM 219999 is the MDS apart of our hours do do for class
2020-07-16 07:25:52 PM bethaldrich5 I am sorry i missed that! I will share just to make sure my thinking is on track! I think that being aware of each residents individual list of active diagnosis could help plan that specific residents activities as far as limitations or things to help focus on for activities. For example adapting an activity for parkinsons so the resident doesn't feel uncomfortable attempting something out of their abailites.

2020-07-16 07:28:26 PM susandziegenbein I have a question concerning the mds. Since I'm not an activity director in a facility and have never worked in one. Is the mds something that the activity director sees and is privy to when dealing with the patients on a regular basis?
2020-07-16 07:28:32 PM tshaw yes i have 3
2020-07-16 07:28:36 PM susandziegenbein Codes are located on the left

2020-07-16 07:29:56 PM 219999 what is mds
2020-07-16 07:29:56 PM racheldonohoue Susan, MDS is basically a set of questions that the residents get asked every three months to assess their mental staus and how they are feeling. Kind of like a check in to see if they are declining or if they are the same.
2020-07-16 07:29:59 PM terrycierra we have wander guards too
2020-07-16 07:30:03 PM sandishell19 MDS is very helpful when I need information about the residents and so is social services

2020-07-16 07:31:45 PM vgreen I write the responses to "how important it is" to them, in narrative form, on their careplan, as to add their voice.

2020-07-16 07:34:04 PM dianemgonzalez 15800
2020-07-16 07:34:16 PM susandziegenbein paula codes are on the left hand side of the mds
2020-07-16 07:34:18 PM brittanyanne24 they are on the left sid eof the MDS
2020-07-16 07:34:18 PM terrycierra if you've never worked in a SNF then this won't make sense
2020-07-16 07:34:21 PM feliciasuominen i am looking at the link that was posted here from our readings this week i believe
2020-07-16 07:34:21 PM laceyh22 we aren't responsible for codes in our facility. are there facilities that require the AD to play a role in that?
2020-07-16 07:34:27 PM balvarez enter the chat room
2020-07-16 07:34:31 PM feliciasuominen this is pretty new to me!
2020-07-16 07:34:53 PM terrycierra yeah, celeste should be here leading the conversation
2020-07-16 07:35:23 PM bethaldrich5 In our faciloity we complete only section F for activities. but we have access to all the other MDS sections for refernce and insight on the residents state of health both physical and mental.
2020-07-16 07:35:26 PM cmckinny its the first numbers infont of the disease, however i dont think they match the form we do, there is always a letter in front of the number
2020-07-16 07:35:45 PM balvarez Sorry it took me so long, my computer wasnt working.
2020-07-16 07:35:47 PM sandishell19 Same here Beth
2020-07-16 07:35:51 PM tshaw We have to do f part of mds and V if a CAA is flagged
2020-07-16 07:35:53 PM feliciasuominen yes i only complete section F too
2020-07-16 07:35:57 PM brittanyanne24 Yes we only do section F
2020-07-16 07:36:01 PM feliciasuominen yes and V too if needed
2020-07-16 07:36:11 PM deneehough We have to do F part and V if it is flagged
2020-07-16 07:36:17 PM racheldonohoue Every facility must have different assigned sections for MDS
2020-07-16 07:36:22 PM dianemgonzalez section F
2020-07-16 07:36:25 PM ehorton f
2020-07-16 07:36:25 PM cmckinny do only section F and MDS nurse does V
2020-07-16 07:36:26 PM paula12 we do f as well
2020-07-16 07:36:32 PM tshaw there are different requirements
2020-07-16 07:36:37 PM bethaldrich5 Yes V as well if it was triggered for activities. For some reason to this day after 2.5 years of doing them I struggle with the CAAs worksheets.
2020-07-16 07:36:58 PM susandziegenbein I'm not working in a facility and never have
2020-07-16 07:37:31 PM vgreen After 20 yrs on CAA's use to be RAPS, I struggle too
2020-07-16 07:37:45 PM sandishell19 We do f section and a progress note on thier activities and submit it to MDS
2020-07-16 07:37:58 PM ehorton i do v when triggered also
2020-07-16 07:37:59 PM racheldonohoue Susan, try being an assistant first. Just my opinion. You learn so much and it is so rewarding!
2020-07-16 07:38:00 PM tshaw i am always not sure of how to answer the CAA
2020-07-16 07:38:16 PM dianemgonzalez agree on the CAA
2020-07-16 07:38:19 PM cmckinny we call have our strenght and weakness, But we have the best job
2020-07-16 07:38:24 PM laceyh22 we do 3 sections altogether for the MDS.
2020-07-16 07:38:49 PM feliciasuominen good I thought it was just me struggling with CAA!
2020-07-16 07:38:57 PM stargie69 my boss showed to me about the CAA but I was cofused
2020-07-16 07:39:03 PM deneehough I agree being an assistant teaches you SO much!
2020-07-16 07:39:05 PM 219999 that is the caa
2020-07-16 07:39:07 PM bethaldrich5 I wonder if at some point Celeste can do a training on CAAs for us!! Sounds like it is a common confusion for all of us!
2020-07-16 07:39:07 PM laceyh22 yes, i hope that we learn more about CAA's because my facility does the bare minimum because no one understands them, not even nursing
2020-07-16 07:39:08 PM susandziegenbein Thanks Rachel. I'm an activities director for youth and adults at a YMCA and would like to add senior activities or adult day care to give respite for adults taking care of their parents
2020-07-16 07:39:22 PM balvarez same here
2020-07-16 07:39:26 PM laceyh22 i feel like it s a disservice to the resident
2020-07-16 07:39:29 PM balvarez that would be helpful
2020-07-16 07:39:30 PM 219999 what is the caa
2020-07-16 07:39:33 PM susandziegenbein What is CAA's?
2020-07-16 07:39:47 PM vgreen Care Area Assessment
2020-07-16 07:39:55 PM ehorton caaa is the v section
2020-07-16 07:40:03 PM susandziegenbein Thanks!
2020-07-16 07:40:11 PM stargie69 yes care area assesstment
2020-07-16 07:40:11 PM tshaw A caa is basiclly was is triggered when the answered are put in to the f section
2020-07-16 07:40:12 PM paula12 we do not have a v section
2020-07-16 07:40:19 PM deneehough I would imagine that Celeste will help us with them.
2020-07-16 07:40:20 PM laceyh22 there are sections of the assessment that can be "triggered" and you have to fill put additional paperwork about the question/problem
2020-07-16 07:40:34 PM cmckinny how do you document for interview with family, and what section do you use, i use under clinican notes or do you use care plan
2020-07-16 07:40:35 PM laceyh22 for instance, hearing/visual problems are often triggered
2020-07-16 07:41:06 PM paula12 i use progress notes to document
2020-07-16 07:41:11 PM tshaw documentation in progress notes
2020-07-16 07:41:19 PM sandishell19 Progress notes
2020-07-16 07:41:24 PM bethaldrich5 If a resident is not interested in particiapting in activites or is depressed and not interested for example it triggers a care area assesment form to fillout that in simple form is to show the problem of why the resident isnt interested in doing things and how you are going to fix the problem or prevent it from getting worse. but it is so confusing how it is done.
2020-07-16 07:41:24 PM terrycierra f
2020-07-16 07:41:39 PM dianemgonzalez Im pretty lucky, my sister is the MDS nurse and does billing, i go bother her when i have a question

2020-07-16 07:41:56 PM susandziegenbein Thanks beth!
2020-07-16 07:41:58 PM vgreen CAA's indicate the need for additional asessments based on the problem identified...little or no interest in activity
2020-07-16 07:42:01 PM laceyh22 yes, you have complete your own little investigation on a certain problem area and you have to come up with a solution
