2016-03-15 06:09:09 PM kmykalw Our volunteers go through like an hour long orentation, which just seems too little to me
2016-03-15 06:09:12 PM jennyw Not everyone knows how to "deal with" dementia!

2016-03-15 06:09:20 PM amber88 i think everyone should go through dementia training. like an actual face to face class....
2016-03-15 06:09:23 PM kimj training class is a good idea? Are background checks nessasery as well?
2016-03-15 06:09:26 PM abryantt Are they easy to make?
2016-03-15 06:09:29 PM theresar We have a big banquet every year to thank the volunteers
2016-03-15 06:09:30 PM awatts jennyw you are right......
2016-03-15 06:09:31 PM brunnert We were just told we can't have and Easter Egg hunt this year. :( Because residents that weren't allowed to eat candy were eating candy last year.
2016-03-15 06:09:34 PM dweeks I love dementia res
2016-03-15 06:09:35 PM jennyw exactly amber!
2016-03-15 06:09:39 PM mattk Amber: Demebtia training sounds like a great idea.
2016-03-15 06:09:40 PM betsyw so far my residents have enjoyed making/decorating pieces of paper for their door
2016-03-15 06:09:41 PM ninajacobs Yes I a m trying to make flowers too, participation lately has been very low here
2016-03-15 06:09:42 PM kgates Can anyone share what the training is made up of, any order of things, who does it, and what is the training based on. Im sure there must be a protocal for training volunterrs
2016-03-15 06:09:43 PM taylor2003 is having the senior prom an expensive event
2016-03-15 06:09:43 PM 34abigailam abryantt, i went to the dollar store and bought these big plastic eggs and we are going to decorate them
2016-03-15 06:09:45 PM shensle you basically plant seeds and let it grow in an ice cream cone.. ince its big enough you plant the ice cream cone and itd a biodegradable pot
2016-03-15 06:09:46 PM jennyw Yes, backround checks for everyone!
2016-03-15 06:09:51 PM jackie26 we do thanks volunteers too
2016-03-15 06:09:55 PM mattk Especially in a class setting.
2016-03-15 06:09:57 PM 103169 I agree, I have anything from 48 to 102 years of age as residents, they are not familiar with some of the illnesses so its good not to do too many one on ones..groups and visits are best..
2016-03-15 06:09:58 PM kmykalw I agree with the dementia training, there are even staff memebrs who don't always know the best approaches because they haven't been trained
2016-03-15 06:09:59 PM abryantt We are also doing a easter egg hunt
2016-03-15 06:10:00 PM amber88 well thats not fair to the ones that can...
2016-03-15 06:10:02 PM 103169 left the chat room
2016-03-15 06:10:04 PM betsyw dollar store is PERFECT for arts and crafts
2016-03-15 06:10:04 PM vstephens flowers from coffee filters are easy and look nice
2016-03-15 06:10:08 PM sunshine001 I agree with the dementia class. If your going to work/volunteer with alzheimers/dementia patients, you should be trained ot do so.
2016-03-15 06:10:10 PM vauriemmo a news group that discusses current events...the political race etc is cool
2016-03-15 06:10:13 PM johne left the chat room
2016-03-15 06:10:15 PM chiquita8 we use to have so many volunteers however, most of them don't want to volunteer in skilled nursing or go throught the back ground checks and so on so I have had a hard time building our volunteer base back up
2016-03-15 06:10:16 PM brunnert I kniw Amber. It made me sad.
2016-03-15 06:10:17 PM khord1 I wanted to paint eggs but couldnt b/c of salmonella

2016-03-15 06:10:21 PM thilst My training is made up of summarizing HIPAA laws and pulls from the employee handbook
2016-03-15 06:10:23 PM shensle as staff we dont even get dementia classes
2016-03-15 06:10:27 PM johne enter the chat room

2016-03-15 06:10:32 PM abryantt How do you do the flower from coffee filters
2016-03-15 06:10:37 PM shensle and we BEG for them cause its always good to learn more
2016-03-15 06:10:45 PM morgan5115 if you train your volunteers well, and they are there not just as a fill in but as a part of the community.....they can be extremely beneficial
2016-03-15 06:10:48 PM sue123 I am attending a training class for Dementia in July.. building is requiring it for nurses working in locked units. They will get a raise when completed.. I am allowed to take it too.. no rasie for me.
2016-03-15 06:10:49 PM jackie26 some of them dont want to deal with dementia and alzheimers
2016-03-15 06:10:50 PM morgan5115 they can be trained in dementia
2016-03-15 06:10:50 PM lynnd Wouldn't the ice cream cone attract rats and varmits who would eat it and probably the plant seeds ?
2016-03-15 06:10:54 PM susanchico try plaste
2016-03-15 06:10:55 PM kathyhughes All the mandatory inservices that you have should be covered with volunteers

2016-03-15 06:11:03 PM thilst I think that there could be more in there about dementia specific care, however. I think that's true for the paid staff at my facility too!
2016-03-15 06:11:05 PM morgan5115 it shouldn't be a scary thing to leave a volunteer with a resident
2016-03-15 06:11:05 PM amber88 volunteers is the topic
2016-03-15 06:11:07 PM shensle i am sure u dont leave it there that long
2016-03-15 06:11:09 PM theresar If a volunteer is doing a 1:1 and the resident needs personal care, put on their call light and tell the resident,"I'm sorry I am unable to help you so I put on your call light and the aide will be here to assist you." This happens all the time with the Activities team....which is not made up of STNAs.
2016-03-15 06:11:10 PM 34abigailam staff and family members, as well friends, do not understand dementia
2016-03-15 06:11:13 PM kathyhughes Well at one point we were talking about volunteers

2016-03-15 06:11:37 PM kimj :)
2016-03-15 06:11:38 PM csteele wow! I did not know that.
2016-03-15 06:11:38 PM vstephens you take the filter and color with a few drops of colored dye then a little water. you gather several together then tie at the bottom pull them slowly so they start to form the flower
2016-03-15 06:11:39 PM 12789 i am dressing up as the easter bunny for our easter egg hunt lol
2016-03-15 06:11:41 PM kathyhughes So I am just as lost
2016-03-15 06:11:44 PM shensle i want actual classes
2016-03-15 06:11:47 PM kathym kathyhughes What type of inservices would be covered?
2016-03-15 06:11:47 PM lakia1985 the patients eightd should have been mandatory for volenteers

2016-03-15 06:11:59 PM thilst It is too cold where I am to do an easter egg hnt outside, so we will do an indoor one!
2016-03-15 06:11:59 PM lakia1985 rights
2016-03-15 06:12:02 PM vauriemmo whats silver chair
2016-03-15 06:12:03 PM 34abigailam a few family members look at me, like i am crazy...talking to the resident, in THEIR OWN WORLD
2016-03-15 06:12:03 PM 12789 they are! I have a lot from our colleges!
2016-03-15 06:12:04 PM kimj we also do
2016-03-15 06:12:04 PM loybrooklyn We have very faithful volunteers. I find that family members of residents who have passed come back to volunteer with us.

2016-03-15 06:12:37 PM abryantt I don't know why volunteers couldn't do silver chair
2016-03-15 06:12:39 PM shensle in our building its only us
2016-03-15 06:12:43 PM 34abigailam reliable volunteers are important
2016-03-15 06:12:44 PM lakia1985 i alsos think that CPR and first aid is a must
2016-03-15 06:12:46 PM betsyw i wish we could print those though, they have so much information

2016-03-15 06:13:23 PM morgan5115 I wouldn't train them in CPR - that should be something nursing takes care of
2016-03-15 06:13:26 PM awallen we have a lot volunterers during summer
2016-03-15 06:13:29 PM vstephens our local Alzheimers assoc. put on classes
2016-03-15 06:13:29 PM shensle HIPPA is super important for volunteers to know
2016-03-15 06:13:30 PM abryantt Only our nurses can do CPR where I work. All of our aids are trained by can't do It
2016-03-15 06:13:30 PM kathym kathyhughes Thank you.
2016-03-15 06:13:33 PM stacy30 enter the chat room
2016-03-15 06:13:33 PM lakia1985 HIPPA is a must
2016-03-15 06:13:38 PM morgan5115 with so many differences in code statuses - that can be a really difficult/sticky situation
2016-03-15 06:13:38 PM lolita47 I think volunteers should be trained like staff so that they can understand how to deal with the residents
2016-03-15 06:13:39 PM sue123 I think HIPPA is a must.
2016-03-15 06:13:40 PM mattk Our community has CPR classes.

2016-03-15 06:13:46 PM lynnd Kathy H,
2016-03-15 06:13:50 PM sunshine001 HIPPA is a must for volunteers to know/understand before entering healthcare setting
2016-03-15 06:13:50 PM kgates We have a HIPPA piece in our orientation packet.
2016-03-15 06:13:51 PM johne We get our volunteers easy on the weekends because they are off work out of school or not running errands
2016-03-15 06:13:51 PM morgan5115 how would your volunteers know code statuses?
2016-03-15 06:13:52 PM katykrv Hello there everyone
2016-03-15 06:13:53 PM abryantt HIPPA is important
2016-03-15 06:13:53 PM betsyw they have to sign HIPPA papers where i work
2016-03-15 06:13:56 PM kathyhughes I would check the facility policy for CPR with volunteers
2016-03-15 06:13:58 PM shensle like make sure u arent saying jsut anything to anyone

2016-03-15 06:14:15 PM jackie26 yes
2016-03-15 06:14:17 PM stacy30 Good Evening Everyone
2016-03-15 06:14:19 PM brunnert I feel that it is important to find a volunteers' strength to help them better volunteer. You can't just tell a volunteer to come help with Bingo. Ask them what the yare interested in and they will be more likely to come and enjoy volunteering.
2016-03-15 06:14:20 PM 103169 Lakia I agree, the last place and this one I worked in has CPR-First Aid, Hippa is a definite especiallywhen it comes to volunteers, I am having a bit of that issue know
2016-03-15 06:14:20 PM theresar We made paper chains today. Pastel colors with stickers. Yes, paper chains. They had fun. Remember, it's the process, not the product.
2016-03-15 06:14:21 PM mattk Yes, hippa is important.
2016-03-15 06:14:22 PM katykrv what are we discussing?
2016-03-15 06:14:23 PM medwards enter the chat room
2016-03-15 06:14:23 PM ninajacobs no CPR in our building except the nurse
2016-03-15 06:14:24 PM robina1 we mainly have family members who volunteer
2016-03-15 06:14:25 PM shensle yeah our CPR classes are usually for nursing and therapy.. i was liek shouldnt everyone know that ?
2016-03-15 06:14:26 PM layvonne2016 HIIPA is a must at my facilty
2016-03-15 06:14:27 PM awalden I have the best luck with resident volunteers from other units in the facility. They are reliable as most of the time they are a short walk away and enjoy being depended upon--gives them satisfaction and a sense of purpose!
2016-03-15 06:14:28 PM sunshine001 In my facility ONLY nurses can do CPR
2016-03-15 06:14:28 PM 34abigailam yes, hippa is very important
2016-03-15 06:14:30 PM mberroa They also participate in any games or activities that we have. We require PPD, MMR and flu shot documentation and orientation
2016-03-15 06:14:33 PM khord1 Paper Chains??? Explain
2016-03-15 06:14:35 PM mattk Our CPR is for anyone interested.
2016-03-15 06:14:38 PM shensle i have argued to have that be mandatory
2016-03-15 06:14:39 PM jackie26 we pay for CPR
2016-03-15 06:14:41 PM sue123 I do not have CPR is it usually a requirement for AD.
2016-03-15 06:14:49 PM aaronf89 enter the chat room
2016-03-15 06:14:51 PM awatts all of our volunteers have to have cpr card
2016-03-15 06:14:52 PM shensle its easy to get
2016-03-15 06:14:54 PM vauriemmo cna's help us transport residents into the ACTIVITY ROOM
2016-03-15 06:14:55 PM amber88 in my facility too but everyone still has to be certified in it..even the housekeeping and maintenence
2016-03-15 06:14:59 PM jennyw wow awatts!
2016-03-15 06:15:02 PM thilst our volunteers dont have CPR
2016-03-15 06:15:03 PM shensle hopsitals usually offer cpr classses and most times free

2016-03-15 06:15:08 PM lynnd Kathy H, last week we asked how to go back after the chats to read through all that we missed. How exactly do we do that?
2016-03-15 06:15:10 PM kmykalw Its a requirement at my facility that all staff in a skipped unit need CPR
2016-03-15 06:15:11 PM morgan5115 how is all of the staff aware of code statuses??
2016-03-15 06:15:12 PM ninajacobs it is good to know anyways so I want to take it but I have to do it on my own and cannot use it at work
2016-03-15 06:15:13 PM kmykalw But not volunteers
2016-03-15 06:15:13 PM awallen we all need to be certified for CPR and renew it yearly
2016-03-15 06:15:17 PM morgan5115 If you are requiring it for all of the staff?
2016-03-15 06:15:19 PM abryantt CNA can help with CPR if the nurse starts it and they can help, but a CNA cant start CPR
2016-03-15 06:15:23 PM 34abigailam people do not realize what it is...not repeating names or taking pictures showing people OR even putting them on Facebook
2016-03-15 06:15:25 PM lolita47 our volunteers don't have to have CPR
2016-03-15 06:15:26 PM kgates What are other facilities doing for volunteer appreciation, we do a certificate with the actual hours and duties they performed along with a pin and either a luncheon, ice cream party with all the topings and ticket draws for prizes.
2016-03-15 06:15:28 PM shensle yeah nope they NEVER ask us to do cpr training
2016-03-15 06:15:29 PM 103169 I like when the volunteers come and help gather the residents for group and visit with the skilled patients, for example reading to them
2016-03-15 06:15:29 PM vstephens I have a cpr card but I just got lucky to get in on a class the facility was putting on

2016-03-15 06:16:13 PM jackie26 lunch with volunteers
2016-03-15 06:16:17 PM 103169 Same here vstephens, prior to the last facility offering it I got it free from my part time job at a gym.
2016-03-15 06:16:18 PM kathyhughes It is required for staff and the state and Federal gov considers volunteers as staff
2016-03-15 06:16:19 PM lolita47 all my volunteers have to have a background check and TNB
2016-03-15 06:16:20 PM kmykalw I have trouble allowing volunteer into residents rooms alone. I always get the residents out of their rooms and bring them to the volunteer.
2016-03-15 06:16:21 PM vstephens I have been certified for a while
2016-03-15 06:16:22 PM lolita47 TB

2016-03-15 06:16:54 PM kathyhughes I really do not know the stats for peope receiving CPR
2016-03-15 06:16:55 PM khord1 Good idea about bringing resident to volunteer
2016-03-15 06:16:55 PM kimj The kind of problems we run into are like today we had social hour after mass. Volunteers help with that as well but sometimes we have a resident who might not be able to come due to certain reasons, the volunteers bring them anyway. We have one with sundowners and when we bring her back up to her room after the mass and social hour the aids complain .
2016-03-15 06:16:56 PM 34abigailam Jackie26, thats too bad. Volunteers are great to bring a lot into the program, different ideas & backgrounds
2016-03-15 06:16:58 PM morgan5115 In our community is it not required - don't believe it is part of the Missouri regs
2016-03-15 06:17:20 PM michellep007 Yes, I voted today too.

2016-03-15 06:17:43 PM marcella enter the chat room
2016-03-15 06:17:43 PM loybrooklyn I really feel that with as many nurses that are around the facility cpr should be left to them especially if you don't know their code status
2016-03-15 06:17:44 PM summermurphy We use volunteers a lot in many areas of the hospital too
2016-03-15 06:17:46 PM 103169 CPR and first aid really should be part of all these facilities, as well as restaurantes and gyms...
2016-03-15 06:17:49 PM katykrv We love our volunteers! we're actually in the middle of planning something special right now for them. we usually do thank you notes and invite them for a lunch but dont have such good turn out with everyone's different schedule

2016-03-15 06:18:11 PM michellep007 Our volunteer appreciation in the first week of April
2016-03-15 06:18:11 PM tlgst16 Interesting. Our volunteers are required to have a TB series, background check, application, and orientation. However, we don't really have any specific does or don't rules for Volunteers.
2016-03-15 06:18:12 PM morgan5115 especially on elderly frail individuals who are a full code
2016-03-15 06:18:19 PM jennyw everyone is required to get a ppd test

2016-03-15 06:18:51 PM mberroa Everyone is also required to get the flu vaccine or wear a mask if they decline
2016-03-15 06:18:52 PM amber88 we have color coded bands for DNR and color coded stickers on the wall next to their name by their room. Also color coded stickers on their charts. but at my facility it is still the nurses responsibility
2016-03-15 06:18:53 PM thilst teburculosis test, i belive
2016-03-15 06:18:53 PM kmykalw I don't know if they are given a "rule" book when they go through orientation, since I don't do that. But I give them an outline of what I like to see on the floor, and things that I'd prefer they do or not do

2016-03-15 06:19:42 PM betsyw we are doing a family night for st. patties day
2016-03-15 06:19:43 PM kgates All of our volunteers need background checks and TB tests it is required before they begin, once I get them back I set up the orientation with them, find out what hours they want to work and ask what they like to do the best to see if we have a place where they would like the most. If not I suggest different things, I always bring a calendar and when finished I talk about the 1:1 visits with them as well. I make sure they know its a committment and the residents are counting on them to be here when they say they are.
