2019-11-05 07:02:07 PM amanda we are going to be doing sing a longs and making orniments
2019-11-05 07:02:14 PM deniseweiss Yes, seasonal aromatherapy works wonders for sure. Adult coloring using holiday-themed pages is also very popular
2019-11-05 07:02:19 PM michelled We are making tree ornaments.
2019-11-05 07:02:28 PM lamearaj Constrution paper with a picture on it and cut into different shapes
2019-11-05 07:02:32 PM kathyhughes What kind of ornaments???
2019-11-05 07:02:38 PM aehutchins Mostly we let the higher functioning residents complete the crafts then they assist in giving the crafts as gifts to those lower functioning residents
2019-11-05 07:03:05 PM tjsheerin yarn crafts, hands on baking ornaments crafts
2019-11-05 07:03:10 PM spassa sing alongs and
2019-11-05 07:03:20 PM amanda We are going to make homeade orinments by doing salt dough ornaments
2019-11-05 07:03:24 PM spassa dress ups
2019-11-05 07:03:29 PM angelalgreathouse We make tree ornaments. like the contruction paper chains or cotton ball snowmen
2019-11-05 07:03:30 PM michelled Plastic balls, an we will fill them with glue and glitter. Some will make snowmen and others make a deer.
2019-11-05 07:03:33 PM gayle78 Hi.For our lower functioning residents we usually do scent based activities.Such as spices for cookies and pies and try to stimulate their memory recall.
2019-11-05 07:03:34 PM ruthknable The highter functioning residents are wanting to give back more, so when those that are lower functioning receive cards or want to do a craft, those who can read to them or help them will do so. We are trying to insitll family in our folks.
2019-11-05 07:03:38 PM aehutchins We try to keep the crafts sensory friendly. Fuzzy picture frames or ornaments with bells
2019-11-05 07:04:31 PM kathyhughes It is a great way to share ideas if you are specific so others can see the ideas
2019-11-05 07:04:40 PM hryniefm Viewing christmas lights, sing alongs, sensory groups with pine scents (during this time we go through a christmas box that has christmas ornaments, stockings, etc.), the kids come and do a christmas craft
2019-11-05 07:04:59 PM spassa do theme dress day... pj and hallmark movies
2019-11-05 07:05:55 PM crdsteele We always invite Santa and Mrs. Claus to come and visit our residents and take pictures.
2019-11-05 07:06:16 PM ruthknable hallmark movies are great, but I personally found that depending on the resident, I have to be careful showing them early in the season. Some of my folks get fixated on having to leave and prep for the holidays etc.
2019-11-05 07:06:24 PM isabel13 we could make ceramic ornaments that fit each individauls personality
2019-11-05 07:06:26 PM kathyhughes So with the lower functioning residents you make ornaments, have aroma therapy, take them out to see the lights and watch movies
2019-11-05 07:06:46 PM angelalgreathouse we are doing glamour pictures this year for our residents to give to their families for christmas
2019-11-05 07:07:24 PM gayle78 Aroma therapy is used so much in our facility. They enjoy it so much.
2019-11-05 07:07:24 PM crdsteele Love the glamour picture idea!
2019-11-05 07:07:51 PM kathyhughes What activities do your residents plan for the holidays?
2019-11-05 07:07:56 PM deniseweiss Our November and December weekends are filled with various groups coming in, mostly intergenerational groups like scouts and schoolchildren Christmas caroling, helping our seniors with crafts and Bingo, and even bringing in animals to spread holiday cheer
2019-11-05 07:07:57 PM amanda we have done the pictures and put them on christmas cards previous years. Some even have family members in them. The families all loved them
2019-11-05 07:07:59 PM ruthknable Our folks also love to help so when we do the holiday family dinner in our Memory Unit, we will let them help set up, serve, etc. this gives them ownership and helps them remember when they hosted these events at their homes.
2019-11-05 07:08:46 PM crdsteele Dirty Santa :)
2019-11-05 07:09:04 PM kathyhughes Please explain Cierra
2019-11-05 07:09:04 PM spassa i have AL and IL and NH.... some like christmas bingo and crafts and some enjoy carolers and thinking about doing elf on shelfs
2019-11-05 07:09:13 PM michelled Ours asked to play a candy cane minute to win it game. Also a game called bloomers.
2019-11-05 07:09:16 PM angelalgreathouse We allow the resident to plan the decorations and decorate for the christmas party for residents and family.
2019-11-05 07:09:29 PM gayle78 Our residents plan seasonal poetry and are really fans of making greeting cards.
2019-11-05 07:09:39 PM amanda I am trying to plan an outing for the residents to see the lights. Also we have 2 family christmas parties that we do.
2019-11-05 07:10:19 PM ruthknable Does anyone have the address where cards can be sent to wounded warriors or shipped to soldiers over seas. Our people are working on Holiday cards to give out to their families and want to expand it.
2019-11-05 07:10:25 PM kathyhughes I had a resident planning committee and they did the planning for activities for each month
2019-11-05 07:10:28 PM deniseweiss We have a holiday raffle each year that our residents decide the theme of
2019-11-05 07:10:42 PM tjsheerin In resibdent council we discuss all the activities that the residents want to do. Such as Christmas party, Day trips, special bingo, baking fun and other activities
2019-11-05 07:10:59 PM kathyhughes They would plan a Scrooge-a-thon and would show a different Scrooge movie 2x a week
2019-11-05 07:11:00 PM isabel13 we take our residents downtown to see the christmas lights as a group, i also have kids from different elementry schools come out to sing christmas carols , we have volenteers come out to paint holiday themed canavas as well
2019-11-05 07:11:03 PM yvetter I like that idea!we have a resident service team and they come up with ideas of activities to hold.
2019-11-05 07:11:09 PM gayle78 Yes,Resident council inputs alot of planning for our calendars as well. They request Pie face alot during holidays.
2019-11-05 07:11:10 PM michelled As do we, and they keep asking for the same activities all the time
2019-11-05 07:11:21 PM spassa I like the scrooge athon
2019-11-05 07:11:59 PM aehutchins We have a hallmark week where we play hallmark christmas movies once a day
2019-11-05 07:12:04 PM kathyhughes The folks loved planning and making the decor for our parties and events
2019-11-05 07:12:04 PM ruthknable We are working on getting in the regular system of the monthly meeting so things don't fall on our director. It has been crazy, she is just back from maternity leave and we have lost 2 team members so we are never all together at once because our hours are split up trying to cover.
2019-11-05 07:12:05 PM tjsheerin my residents love their bingo
2019-11-05 07:12:33 PM gayle78 Oh Bingo is a MUST!!
2019-11-05 07:12:35 PM rhondakapcsos enter the chat room
2019-11-05 07:12:44 PM yvetter Yes! That is what we do for crafts. This year we are going to have each unit decorate their hals and have a friendly contest and see who can "deck the halls"
2019-11-05 07:12:46 PM amanda with Resident council there is usually on 6 people that show up and they talk about what they would like to see on the calander and when it is added to the calander they never show up. So i usually have to go around to the residents indiviually and get ideas.
2019-11-05 07:12:49 PM angelalgreathouse so do mine. we have bingo 3 times a weeks
2019-11-05 07:12:51 PM lamearaj yes BINGO too
2019-11-05 07:12:53 PM crdsteele DIRTY SANTA: This is for our Assisted Living Building- the residents will each buy a funny gift under $5 and wrap it and stick it under the tree. Each person will draw a number to see who goes first. Each person will take turns either opening up a new present or stealing a present that somebody already has opened that they like. Once an item has been stolen 3 times it becomes "frozen" and cannot be stolen again. This game brings a lot of laughs!!
2019-11-05 07:13:00 PM ruthknable Ours do too Kathy. They love making the things for the bulletin boards each month. And in baking club each person is designated aperson to do each thing.
2019-11-05 07:13:08 PM isabel13 i enjoy giving the resident different options on there holiday movies and there activities as well i even print out holiday day themed bingos that the residents and families enjoy playing
2019-11-05 07:13:17 PM marymable1 we have college kids to come in a we have a christmas hunt and turkey hunt
2019-11-05 07:13:23 PM ruthknable If there is no BINGO, we will have a revolution!!!! It is taboo to not have BINGO
2019-11-05 07:13:40 PM yvetter Crdsteele i like that idea!!
2019-11-05 07:13:44 PM gayle78 Elf on the Shelf....I forgot we do that.
2019-11-05 07:13:51 PM chiquitacdelaney enter the chat room
2019-11-05 07:14:08 PM alexiew enter the chat room
2019-11-05 07:14:11 PM chiquitacdelaney hi
2019-11-05 07:14:14 PM angelalgreathouse oh the famouse elf on the shelf. our resident love that
2019-11-05 07:14:16 PM aehutchins All great ideas
2019-11-05 07:14:24 PM michelled I thought about elf on a shelf but was not sure how to do it.
2019-11-05 07:14:46 PM crdsteele Ruth: go to operationgratitude.com. They list the instructions and address to send letters to soldiers and veterans!
2019-11-05 07:14:49 PM spassa im not sure if my residents will understand it
2019-11-05 07:14:53 PM tjsheerin every week durning the holidays we offer a classic christmas movie and snack like White Christmas, Holiday Inn
2019-11-05 07:14:55 PM hryniefm Many times it is a pain to get the residents to help plan activities. Every resident council meeting we discuss activities. Many times they only offer input on what they would like to do for an outing the next month. They mostly consist of going out to eat! But I am thankful that they let meknow where they like to go out
2019-11-05 07:15:03 PM kathyhughes How do you go about doing Elf on the Shelf at your facility?
2019-11-05 07:15:19 PM ruthknable This Saturday, we are partnering with a local church to pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child to send out to children around teh world. The residents love that too.
2019-11-05 07:15:24 PM aehutchins I would go through 50 elves! My residents have a habit of picking up decorations and taking them to their rooms lol
2019-11-05 07:15:38 PM amanda I would like to do it but I have residents that like to take stuff and hide and it
2019-11-05 07:15:47 PM gayle78 We grab funny ideas from Pinterest and whoever finds him that day gets a coupon for our resident store then we have to move him.Usually myself or my staff will move him before they leave for the night. They are always ion the hunt for him.
2019-11-05 07:16:05 PM alexiew Bingo every wedusday and friday 2:00pm seem to be a good time for everyone.
2019-11-05 07:16:11 PM ruthknable aehutchins: us too! The other facility I worked at did paper elves so so more than one person could find it.
2019-11-05 07:16:24 PM crdsteele I like the coupon idea. That way it gives them an incentive to return the elf to you haha
2019-11-05 07:16:27 PM aehutchins Oh, thats good
2019-11-05 07:16:32 PM chiquitacdelaney we still thanksgiving decor right now
2019-11-05 07:16:40 PM angelalgreathouse we have one resident place the elf and the one that finds it gets to place it next. one time we had the elf riding on the back of one of the dogs in our facitlity. residents had a riot with it
2019-11-05 07:16:48 PM gayle78 Yes,we have some residents that move things as well so we have a spare elf in our office. It happens.
2019-11-05 07:17:05 PM rhondakapcsos we are planning a christmas around the world event and gathering reciepes from the residents and doing activities and a treat from each country that we have
2019-11-05 07:17:06 PM alexiew Were having a christmas Craft sell and we have craft times where they make things for the the sell
2019-11-05 07:17:29 PM tjsheerin my facilty does not participate with elf on the shelf as it is considered a child activity.
2019-11-05 07:17:35 PM gayle78 haha yes.We give them 1$ coupon to get a snack or trinket.
2019-11-05 07:17:37 PM angelalgreathouse christmas around the world. i love that idea
2019-11-05 07:17:37 PM alexiew I wonder how good were going to do this year all the funds go towards the life enrichment center.
2019-11-05 07:17:44 PM rhondakapcsos we are doing a christmas craft show/sale too
2019-11-05 07:17:52 PM isabel13 i also do an activitey similair to angel on a tree for the residents were families and friends can grab a angel with a descrpition what the resident may want for christmas and family and friends and the staff can grab one to two angels and buy the residents a gift
2019-11-05 07:17:57 PM alexiew Bake sell also?
2019-11-05 07:18:26 PM tjsheerin Similar to the angel tree, we are doing the "giving tree" for all our residents
2019-11-05 07:18:33 PM gayle78 Some facilities find this childish, yes. However you can always "hide"something other than an elf.A football helmet or anything really.
2019-11-05 07:18:41 PM isabel13 what a great idea
2019-11-05 07:19:10 PM yvetter The giving tree is what we do in our facility. We interview each resident and have them tell us the top 3 things they want for christmas.
2019-11-05 07:19:23 PM crdsteele What is the giving tree?
2019-11-05 07:19:43 PM chiquitacdelaney we have our resident dressi up and the reindeers and mr mrs claws
2019-11-05 07:19:45 PM michelled We have a wreath for each hallway. We just hung ours up today
2019-11-05 07:19:56 PM kathyhughes Gayle we would hide items for each month
2019-11-05 07:19:59 PM angelalgreathouse we did a game last year. find the activity family of snowmen. each day they would be in a different location. at the end of the week whoever correctly named all the places won a prize
2019-11-05 07:20:14 PM amanda Thats a good idea a giving tree for the facility
2019-11-05 07:20:14 PM kathyhughes And we would have clues...and some were harder than others
2019-11-05 07:20:17 PM ruthknable I am also hoping we can get an "adopt a resident" program going. Where a staff person picks a residents name and buys them something little $5 or under and wrap it for them to open on Christmas Day. Some of our folks have no one and no visitors on Christmas.
2019-11-05 07:20:20 PM isabel13 yes we do the same to we ask the resident for 3 different gifts they may want its always so much fun
2019-11-05 07:20:29 PM tjsheerin Its a tree that has a tag for each resident and the staff pick a tag and buy that resident their requested item.
2019-11-05 07:20:32 PM gayle78 OOHHH I like that idea Kathy.Thank you!Yes,clues are posted on the units.
2019-11-05 07:21:01 PM alexiew My facility is to large for gift giving it doesn't seem to work out very well. Instead we have many different chirstmas trees in different areas in the home and the front desk has a list of trees and resident with their family memebers can have a chirstmas tree hunt.
2019-11-05 07:21:02 PM crdsteele I want to have a door decorating contest. Each staff member will pair up with a resident to decorate their door and the winning team gets a special lunch
2019-11-05 07:21:02 PM chiquitacdelaney ok thats seem kool
2019-11-05 07:21:03 PM angelalgreathouse we have been adopting residents for years. it goes over very well. most adopt 2 residents.
2019-11-05 07:21:04 PM rhondakapcsos One of the countries that we are celebrating is Germany, making ginger bread houses, and gingerbread man, also hiding the pickle in the tree and they can win a small gift if they find it. We have 8 trees up in the facility for christmas
2019-11-05 07:21:11 PM aehutchins I love it ! I'll turn it on them and start hiding stuff from them. I think it will really keep a couple of our restless residents busy.
2019-11-05 07:21:19 PM chiquitacdelaney were dong a secret santa as well
2019-11-05 07:21:28 PM kathyhughes Outr favorite place was the snowman in the window! He would have something that they needed to find...like a carrot or scarf
2019-11-05 07:21:42 PM yvetter We have someone dress up like mr and mrs. clause and they go around the building handing out the gifts. We also have a photo with santa set up in the dining room and residents and famly can take a picture with santa
2019-11-05 07:21:49 PM rhondakapcsos like that idea

2019-11-05 07:22:47 PM chiquitacdelaney llol santa
2019-11-05 07:22:49 PM alexiew this is great because it gives somthing for the resident to do with their family memebers for the holidays and its a great actvities to decorate the different trees with residents.
2019-11-05 07:23:37 PM gayle78 I have so many trees!Amazon is my downfall for colored trees.I just love them,
2019-11-05 07:23:40 PM alexiew We have a santa too! Goes with are christmas party.
2019-11-05 07:23:51 PM spassa what about like build a snowman ... hide different pieces of the snowman and as residents bring to the drop off area they can start to form the snowman...
2019-11-05 07:23:59 PM kathyhughes The night staff would leave christmas stockings for each resident at night...they did it for years
2019-11-05 07:24:22 PM ruthknable Great idea Kathy. Our night staff would love to do that.
2019-11-05 07:24:24 PM hryniefm Every year we have a family christmas dinner. Each resident gets to have four family members come and eat for free. During their meal, santa and mrs. claus delivers gifts (that the staff has bought for each individual). They do pictures. Also during dinner, there is a entertainer walking around playing music

2019-11-05 07:24:58 PM gayle78 We have "Roll a snowman" If you "roll" a #2 for example, you draw a hat and etc.The first 1 who is done wins. They like that 1.
2019-11-05 07:25:06 PM spassa I dont have high functioning residents but they would enjoy it
2019-11-05 07:25:06 PM michelled I like that idea Kathy, but our staff don't care that much

2019-11-05 07:26:18 PM ruthknable very sad michelled. We had that problem and now have some new night folks who really get it that this is all about enriching the lives of the residents.

2019-11-05 07:26:54 PM kathyhughes The staff did it for years and I am sure that your staff is busy....but sometimes we have to look at the positive and perhaps they might like the idea
2019-11-05 07:26:55 PM michelled I still might try to sell that idea. It's worth a try
