2019-12-10 07:11:06 PM alexiew there is a problem with that where i work. Were not aloud to trim nails. I don't know why.
2019-12-10 07:11:07 PM rhondakapcsos only file and paint
2019-12-10 07:11:20 PM serinamcwha Jessica... yes, i was mentioning that to a small group of men who were having lunch together last week. The hard part is taking stock of what they would want to engage in.

2019-12-10 07:11:33 PM valeriepeace I think Pinterest takes all the guess work out of arts and crafts!! So many things to do, so many materials we an recycle
2019-12-10 07:11:39 PM alexiew Warm wash cloth, file, clean, and lotion.
2019-12-10 07:11:42 PM briannal I can only file and paint as well Rhonda. CNA's or nurses can do the trimming
2019-12-10 07:11:43 PM dmkovach we can not trim diabetics
2019-12-10 07:11:47 PM serinamcwha It has not been in the forefront of our department.
2019-12-10 07:11:50 PM kathyhughes we never cut the nails, nursing had to do that...we would supply them with the nail polish and other nail items
2019-12-10 07:11:50 PM isabel13 i as well do nails once a week trimming ,filing ,painting i always have a long line of at least 12 residents and im always the only one to do it
2019-12-10 07:12:02 PM valeriepeace We can only file and paint nails as well. No clippers
2019-12-10 07:12:02 PM dmkovach I am a cna
2019-12-10 07:12:06 PM michelep Jessica, we've tried everything...personally, she would benefit from an anti-anxiety med but the daugther refuses. :/
2019-12-10 07:12:14 PM rachel1980 I have tried to get the male population invovled but I have a hard time with that and actually got more female participation...
2019-12-10 07:12:15 PM alexiew Only CNAs
2019-12-10 07:12:23 PM tjsheerin so was I
2019-12-10 07:12:24 PM spankylee99 the skilled nursing facility i work for has 4 units 3 rd fl Alzheimers, Dementia unit, 4th floor our residents live who otherwise cannot manage at home, 1st and 2nd is our skilled rehab units
2019-12-10 07:12:26 PM angelalgreathouse how often do you do stag night valerie. that sounds like something that may be fun for the few males we have in our facility
2019-12-10 07:12:28 PM serinamcwha rachel.. yes, that is our issue here too!
2019-12-10 07:12:30 PM gayle78 We paint nails and clean but dont trim.Namaste is where most of the nail care is done.
2019-12-10 07:12:36 PM spassa left the chat room
2019-12-10 07:12:44 PM alexiew we don't paint because they have a person that comes in though the salon that paints them for them.
2019-12-10 07:12:44 PM kathyhughes Ok..I had a facility full on Men at one point it was great
2019-12-10 07:12:45 PM jessicabaucom Serinam try to find common ground with them, like were any of them in the military, or what sports to games do they like
2019-12-10 07:12:46 PM valeriepeace I feel when all else fails, music is the natural calmer. It always seems to help in many situations. Calming music
2019-12-10 07:12:51 PM alexiew how?
2019-12-10 07:12:53 PM kathyhughes I had them plan their activities
2019-12-10 07:12:55 PM serinamcwha I don't know what a stag night is... i'll have to research that
2019-12-10 07:12:56 PM tanya1 i've been working on making lg targets. For a shooting range, for toy bows and toy guns. I'm from WV, and its bow, soon gun season. I'll have my project up and ready for my males. Well all in the next wk
2019-12-10 07:13:03 PM kavitajc Its a challenge to get them to participate in Art and crafts
2019-12-10 07:13:07 PM isabel13 the only nails we can not trim are our diabetics
2019-12-10 07:13:10 PM alexiew women seem to live longer
2019-12-10 07:13:12 PM valeriepeace We only call it Stag night because it refers to Male.
2019-12-10 07:13:23 PM gayle78 Our residents plan our whole calendar at resident council.
2019-12-10 07:13:31 PM serinamcwha thank hyou Valerie!
2019-12-10 07:13:40 PM kathyhughes I had them come for a lunch just for the Men and we then asked them what did they enjoy doing when they were younger
2019-12-10 07:13:40 PM jessicabaucom Kavita our higher ones are the eaisest to do crafts with
2019-12-10 07:13:41 PM dmkovach we decide things to do in resident council and do our own things as well
2019-12-10 07:13:49 PM michelep That's amazing, Gayle!
2019-12-10 07:13:53 PM kathyhughes I also found that the guys wanted to "Help"
2019-12-10 07:14:00 PM serinamcwha jessica... retired Lutheran Pastors.. that's what they have in common! :)
2019-12-10 07:14:05 PM valeriepeace Red Hat Club for women, Poestry club, We also do a BAKE AND TASTE class where we do a "cooking show"
2019-12-10 07:14:07 PM kathyhughes so instead of asking them to attend I would ask them to help me
2019-12-10 07:14:11 PM tanya1 Kathy, Great idea
2019-12-10 07:14:26 PM valeriepeace I agree, great idea.
2019-12-10 07:14:28 PM czuniga thats a good idea
2019-12-10 07:14:28 PM jessicabaucom SO get them to do a bible study group Serinam
2019-12-10 07:14:29 PM gayle78 Thanks michelep.
2019-12-10 07:14:32 PM serinamcwha That is a great idea Kathy! I had one gentleman who was like that... loved to help, only came so he could help get residents around.
2019-12-10 07:14:41 PM alexiew asking for help is alwasy the best appoarch
2019-12-10 07:14:52 PM kavitajc Great idea agree
2019-12-10 07:14:53 PM serinamcwha JEssica... yes, our pastor leads that too! Perhaps a specific bible study for the retired group!
2019-12-10 07:14:57 PM czuniga that makes since
2019-12-10 07:15:04 PM jessicabaucom yea that might work out
2019-12-10 07:15:05 PM angelalgreathouse very good idea
2019-12-10 07:15:13 PM kathyhughes We had two men who liked to help out Maintanence and they would have a clip board and write down things that the Maintanence guys needed to look at
2019-12-10 07:15:26 PM rachel1980 That is true I do find that I can get most males to "help" and organize or clean when they see me doing it...lol
2019-12-10 07:15:26 PM serinamcwha LOL! I bet they enjoyed that very much!
2019-12-10 07:15:33 PM dmkovach wow great idea
2019-12-10 07:15:35 PM evetteh enter the chat room
2019-12-10 07:15:37 PM czuniga thats funny
2019-12-10 07:15:48 PM serinamcwha I had one gentleman who was always wanting to sweep up the pine cones, so we got him his own broom and bin for picking up!
2019-12-10 07:15:54 PM evetteh sorry I'm late
2019-12-10 07:15:58 PM kathyhughes I also told some of the guys that the "boss" wanted me to have more people at a certain activity and they could help me out by coming
2019-12-10 07:15:58 PM spankylee99 providing warm, stimulating activities usually encourages residents to participate in activities or rehab, perhaps changing up the rehab seen during the cold season might help. What are your thoughts on that?
2019-12-10 07:16:12 PM serinamcwha Way to spin it, Kathy!
2019-12-10 07:16:19 PM tanya1 I have a lady who wears gloves. and assists in folding linens
2019-12-10 07:16:19 PM gayle78 Our residents are WILD for maintanence issues.I could never do that. They would have our guys building new walls lol
2019-12-10 07:16:34 PM valeriepeace Gardening club. We plant, we water. We also painted pots, painted garden stones, made bird houses. Women and men love it.
2019-12-10 07:16:39 PM briannal On our memory care unit we have 2 women who set the tables for us before lunch and dinner. They LOVE it
2019-12-10 07:16:54 PM kathyhughes Thats great Paulette
2019-12-10 07:17:11 PM valeriepeace I like that idea, Brianna
2019-12-10 07:17:19 PM alexiew we have a two residents that help fold the activitis laudry, aprons and towels
2019-12-10 07:17:21 PM spankylee99 Perhaps the most challenging is finding activites that will keep the attention of the residents
2019-12-10 07:17:21 PM jessicabaucom oh Kathy that idea you had for the hot cocoa bar was a hit
2019-12-10 07:17:23 PM torijarrett I love all those gardening ideas! They could do it now for summer
2019-12-10 07:17:25 PM kathyhughes We also would have them take attendance for us
2019-12-10 07:17:26 PM dmkovach we have resident choir they love it
2019-12-10 07:17:34 PM kathyhughes Thanks Jessica
2019-12-10 07:17:41 PM jessicabaucom thank you
2019-12-10 07:17:46 PM hollybv18 do you have any ideas to have 1-1 to visits when you really do not have time?
2019-12-10 07:17:53 PM alexiew we have a residnet that passes out bullets for church service
2019-12-10 07:17:57 PM gayle78 Resident choir!!!!Oh I LOVE that!!
2019-12-10 07:18:09 PM alexiew bulletins
2019-12-10 07:18:30 PM dmkovach we go to area sister facilites to perform
2019-12-10 07:18:34 PM jessicabaucom Holly I play music for them
2019-12-10 07:18:35 PM tanya1 I have 2 residents who pickup and pass the daily newspaper
2019-12-10 07:18:42 PM briannal We use to resident choir but our aide who ran it and knew how to sing moved away, but the residents absolutely LOVED it. We performed for all the units last christmas
2019-12-10 07:18:42 PM kavitajc We also have the ladies help with setting the table for luncheons, lunch and dinner
2019-12-10 07:18:47 PM alexiew every time i do music sing along i say that im trying to form a choir so we need to practice. It gets them motivated.
2019-12-10 07:18:47 PM kathyhughes I would walk around the faciity every single day and greet all of the residents, it only took about 1 hour for 160 people
2019-12-10 07:18:49 PM tiffym73 Holly, I take a balloon or a soft ball for 1-1
2019-12-10 07:18:54 PM michelep glad it's bulletins and not bullets, what kind of facility do you work in Alexiew? Lol
2019-12-10 07:18:54 PM serinamcwha Giving them purpose... that is the idea!
2019-12-10 07:18:57 PM dmkovach they perform at memorial services
2019-12-10 07:19:04 PM angelalgreathouse we have a few volunteers that come in weekly to visit with 1:1 residents
2019-12-10 07:19:07 PM alexiew I do that every morning on my unit.
2019-12-10 07:19:20 PM kathyhughes We also would go to every residents room to invite them to activities
2019-12-10 07:19:21 PM evetteh I have a resident with dementia that helps me take out the garbage after happy hour every Friday
2019-12-10 07:19:29 PM jessicabaucom Do that too
2019-12-10 07:19:29 PM rhondakapcsos I do the same thing in the morning Kathy, we have 125 residents
2019-12-10 07:19:32 PM hollybv18 ok these are great thank yo
2019-12-10 07:19:35 PM kathyhughes We had a 1-1 cart that we used
2019-12-10 07:19:44 PM tjsheerin thtas the frist thing I do in the morning when I get in
2019-12-10 07:19:48 PM gayle78 We have a Hmor&Happenings daily newsletter we hand out to everyone in the morning.Yes,an hour is usually how long for us too.
2019-12-10 07:19:50 PM valeriepeace We go to every residents room before activities and personally encourage them to join in the fun
2019-12-10 07:19:54 PM alexiew What was on the cart?
2019-12-10 07:19:55 PM kathyhughes also we would do a tea cart once a week and a juice bar once a week
2019-12-10 07:19:55 PM serinamcwha knocking on doors in our assisted living. that is one of the tasks of our activities - however, it pains me when nursing staff say it isn't their job to help with activities.
2019-12-10 07:20:00 PM gayle78 Humor&Happenings
2019-12-10 07:20:09 PM alexiew 1:1 cart?
2019-12-10 07:20:15 PM tiffym73 I play sport clips for the guys who like sports during 1-1
2019-12-10 07:20:20 PM alexiew Magzines?
2019-12-10 07:20:22 PM briannal I'm lucky with the 1:1 visits since I live in FL so I can take them outside
2019-12-10 07:20:24 PM jessicabaucom Alex yea
2019-12-10 07:20:29 PM angelalgreathouse I also go room to rrom every morning greeting resident of the faciltiy. they love it and i enjoy it also
2019-12-10 07:20:30 PM tanya1 I do the same daily, and i assist in the dining rm. this is ehere i do another reminder to them about the next activity
2019-12-10 07:20:52 PM tjsheerin I've started doing a hot cocoa bar once a week now that it's cold and snowny here
2019-12-10 07:20:55 PM evetteh Knocking on doors and only working 4 hours a day takes a whole hour and is tiring
2019-12-10 07:21:00 PM spankylee99 Residents realy dont have control with asking repeated questions because of memeory loss. What i find helpul is re-directing and assisting with activities, talking about things they enjoy and asking why. They usally have a lot to say which can be very informative.
2019-12-10 07:21:06 PM jessicabaucom Alex you can take books, magazines, or puzzles to give to residents
2019-12-10 07:21:09 PM kathyhughes We had whatever the residents were interested in...Movies, word games, decks of cards, sharpened pencils, pens, letter writing materials, candy bars, and what ever they needed
2019-12-10 07:21:36 PM alexiew I wish I had more time to do 1:1s. It never seems to be looked at as an important thing. When people see actvitiies they expect large group programs.
2019-12-10 07:21:45 PM rachel1980 I always make sure I greet each resident in the mornings even if i need to go to their rooms. I know they are memory care but I like to think they feel better knowing somone says good morning
2019-12-10 07:22:00 PM alexiew same
2019-12-10 07:22:03 PM kathyhughes We also had several themed carts depending on the season and each afternoon we had a Happy Hour Cart
2019-12-10 07:22:08 PM jessicabaucom I go to all the rooms and wish them a good morning
2019-12-10 07:22:08 PM czuniga The cart is primarily what I use for my swing bed patients
2019-12-10 07:22:09 PM kavitajc At our facility we do 1-1 in the morning for 1 hour also
2019-12-10 07:22:11 PM serinamcwha alex - that's my issue too... what is the right amount 1:1 we should be providing?Should it be tailored to those who don't come out of their rooms?
2019-12-10 07:22:14 PM valeriepeace We do Prizes Galore where we set up a store and they cash in their bingo tickets. Do any of you do this? If so, what do you offer in your store for their prizes?
2019-12-10 07:22:16 PM angelalgreathouse my director requires use to visit 3 a day.
2019-12-10 07:22:16 PM briannal I agree rachel saying good morning helps with their morning
2019-12-10 07:22:49 PM dmkovach we help at all meals and greet them all at breakfast and remind of activities
2019-12-10 07:22:58 PM briannal We do 1:1 visits in the morning for about 30 mins and then again after lunch from about 1 to 2
2019-12-10 07:23:06 PM alexiew i visit for 30 minutes everyday and i have 25 people
2019-12-10 07:23:11 PM alexiew so they dont get alot of time
2019-12-10 07:23:13 PM kavitajc Yes valerie we also do and its our general store
2019-12-10 07:23:14 PM sarah We struggle with1:1
2019-12-10 07:23:21 PM spankylee99 Staff other than a nurse or somtimes a GNA, CNA is not allowed to cut/trim nails because the patient may be diabetic. Cutting into the nailbed or the skin could cause a lot of problem
2019-12-10 07:23:28 PM briannal I have a 179 bed facility though so A LOT of residents
2019-12-10 07:23:42 PM kathyhughes First of all you have to determine if the resident really needs 1-1 activities
2019-12-10 07:23:42 PM jessicabaucom same here Briannal
2019-12-10 07:23:55 PM hollybv18 the store idea is great, i need to priortize my mornings iguess but so much other duties are thrown on us
2019-12-10 07:23:59 PM serinamcwha kathy, based on assessment?
2019-12-10 07:24:00 PM kavitajc True
2019-12-10 07:24:04 PM isabel13 i agree as big as we are its hard to get to all the 1:1 actvities is so important and a huge responsabilty i wish they would give us more help i do everything myself and its over whelming
2019-12-10 07:24:05 PM tiffym73 we do ast least 15 min with each 1-1
2019-12-10 07:24:09 PM rachel1980 question all, i have a unit were I love to leave out books, magazines, puzzles and such but 'upper management' and some staff feel like it is a waste because residents take things or move them. mind you I work in memory care. I told them my solution is renewing the magazines we have so many donaated to us that I could care less if they take them to their rooms.
2019-12-10 07:24:10 PM briannal how many aides do you have jessica?
2019-12-10 07:24:17 PM gayle78 We base 1x1 visits on their goals. If they havent met their social goals in their quarterly notes we go from there. We also 1x1 visit residents who stay in their rooms about 15min each unless they want us to stay longer.
2019-12-10 07:24:21 PM kathyhughes If residents have family in regularly or perfer to be alone then they might only need a quick visit
2019-12-10 07:24:36 PM isabel13 very true
2019-12-10 07:24:37 PM kathyhughes Yes based on the Initial Activities Assessment
2019-12-10 07:24:43 PM serinamcwha thank you!
2019-12-10 07:24:46 PM alexiew Somtimes it things simple like hanging up a picture, brushing hair, organzing cloths in closet, looking at actvity calendar , talking about family, opening mail.
2019-12-10 07:25:10 PM jessicabaucom The group is with a director and 3 others that is includeing me
2019-12-10 07:25:16 PM jessicabaucom Briannal
2019-12-10 07:25:21 PM gayle78 The last boss we had never went by their assessments and goals so it was very willy nilly as to whom had 1x1 visits.
2019-12-10 07:25:27 PM alexiew I make sure in my room visits that the room is nice and organzied and clean.
2019-12-10 07:25:30 PM angelalgreathouse we leave books, magazines, newspapers, games, and other thing sout in the memory unit.
2019-12-10 07:25:39 PM valeriepeace If the resident has a family or friend visit, does that count as a 1:1 with State? I guess what I am asking, If they are having interaction, do we need to also document a 1:1 with staff that week?
2019-12-10 07:25:44 PM dmkovach Do you have many assistants in the 179 bed facilities
2019-12-10 07:25:46 PM briannal oh ok so not too bad we just have 1 extra aide then you
2019-12-10 07:25:46 PM alexiew ill set people up with somthing to read
2019-12-10 07:25:52 PM kathyhughes Have your staff in Memory Care watch some Teepa Snow YouTube videos
2019-12-10 07:25:57 PM jessicabaucom We are getting another one soon
2019-12-10 07:26:22 PM serinamcwha We have Teepa Snow on iN2L, but I don't think they have watched the videos.
2019-12-10 07:26:25 PM kavitajc Teepa Snow is amazing
2019-12-10 07:26:31 PM briannal We have a director an assistant director and than 4 full time rec aides dmkovach
2019-12-10 07:26:32 PM jessicabaucom We have 2 long term halll and 1 short term hall that has long term residents on them
2019-12-10 07:26:37 PM serinamcwha It needs more encouraging in my community.
2019-12-10 07:26:45 PM kathyhughes Valerie it is up to you...I would check on residents every day...so a quick check in visit was all that they needed
2019-12-10 07:26:54 PM angelalgreathouse yes she is. can learn a lot from teepa snow
2019-12-10 07:27:09 PM valeriepeace Okay Thank you
2019-12-10 07:27:16 PM tanya1 I agree, from my assessment. I make up weekly packets, stop by and talk breify. And drop them off. They are art sheets to color, wordsearches, etc. I provide notebooks for journaling, and materials needed to do the packets.
2019-12-10 07:27:23 PM dmkovach ok we are 150 bed with 1 director 3 assistant
2019-12-10 07:27:27 PM kathyhughes I had residents who's hobbies where not in a large group of strangers and therefore they did not have social skills for large groups
2019-12-10 07:27:58 PM spankylee99 At our facility we have a little shop set up in the front lobby, nothing big just table with varius items on it, or residents rotate on a weekly basis which two will be in charge of selling and collecting the money for the week. They look foward to do that every Mon, Wed, Fri
2019-12-10 07:28:15 PM kathyhughes I had one guy who loved his TV so each morning on my way to my office I would deliver a copy of the daily TV schedule for him
2019-12-10 07:28:44 PM gayle78 left the chat room
2019-12-10 07:28:47 PM tanya1 Great Idea
2019-12-10 07:28:49 PM evetteh It's hard to get most of our residents to get involved in activities
2019-12-10 07:28:57 PM rhondakapcsos what a great idea
