2019-11-26 07:02:17 PM splush2402 Ours do help. They have been making ornaments for the past couple weeks. They are so darn cute.
2019-11-26 07:02:24 PM angelalgreathouse Yes they do. we did the memory unit first. they had so much fun. I go down there every morning and they are gathered around it. too cute
2019-11-26 07:02:28 PM tjsheerin The residents, staff and family decorate the doors at my facility
2019-11-26 07:02:28 PM jklein912 they help make the ornaments and the commitees help decorate. and yes with no organic materials or lights unless they are fiber optic
2019-11-26 07:02:36 PM joannet I usually have a door decorating contest for the residents and then have vendors come out to judge

2019-11-26 07:02:55 PM nmcnutt1 Hello everyone. Looked back real quick seems like we're all talking about christmas trees and winter decorating. We go tomorrow to pull our decorations out of a storage shed. Whole department is new so we have no idea what we are going to find
2019-11-26 07:03:08 PM spassa Good Evening
2019-11-26 07:03:15 PM angelalgreathouse We are going to start the doors dcorating next week.
2019-11-26 07:03:17 PM jklein912 our safety guy wont allow us to use paper things on the walls or doors so there are challenges
2019-11-26 07:03:19 PM splush2402 I love the door decorating idea, but our Administrator will not allow it.
2019-11-26 07:03:22 PM tjsheerin nmcnutt - surprises!
2019-11-26 07:03:23 PM nmcnutt1 Do you guys ever have backlash for the door decorating?
2019-11-26 07:03:31 PM joannet Started making tree ornaments so residents can decorate their tree in the activities room with them
2019-11-26 07:03:32 PM kathyhughes Hello
2019-11-26 07:03:50 PM tjsheerin This is my first Christmas at my current facility, but I've never had any issues prior
2019-11-26 07:03:59 PM spassa we are not allowed door decororations either
2019-11-26 07:04:00 PM kathyhughes No we never did as we would spray everything with a flame retardant spray
2019-11-26 07:04:02 PM joannet the residents are making their own ornaments
2019-11-26 07:04:43 PM angelalgreathouse we are allowed to decorate door and walls
2019-11-26 07:04:51 PM spassa we do a big dinner for residents and family on all three departments
2019-11-26 07:04:51 PM ahicks enter the chat room
2019-11-26 07:05:00 PM kathyhughes It all depends on your faciity policies
2019-11-26 07:05:30 PM nmcnutt1 hmm I know we mentioned it but got shut down quick. We are doing plenty of ornament and room decor crafts to compensate tho!
2019-11-26 07:05:32 PM jklein912 yeah my current facility is pretty strict... we cant have balloons
2019-11-26 07:05:32 PM kathyhughes We usually had our survey during the holidays so they would ask
2019-11-26 07:05:52 PM tanya1 enter the chat room
2019-11-26 07:06:08 PM ahicks speaking of survey...im hoping ours does not come on thanksgiving
2019-11-26 07:06:08 PM kathyhughes Well again a faciity policy more than likely because of latex allergies
2019-11-26 07:06:17 PM nmcnutt1 We are in our window now... waiting for them to arrive any day now
2019-11-26 07:06:30 PM jklein912 "infection control"

2019-11-26 07:06:45 PM tjsheerin nmcnutt - have they been on time for survey?
2019-11-26 07:06:46 PM angelalgreathouse The wait is always so much fun. I am glad we are done with ours.
2019-11-26 07:06:57 PM jklein912 we are due in february
2019-11-26 07:06:57 PM tanya1 Hello everyone
2019-11-26 07:07:08 PM ahicks I heard they have to do so many holidays...is that true
2019-11-26 07:07:25 PM angelalgreathouse they came on the last day of our window.
2019-11-26 07:07:26 PM tjsheerin 20% of survey's are off hours & Holidays
2019-11-26 07:07:36 PM kathyhughes No Angela it is random
2019-11-26 07:07:38 PM tjsheerin at least that's what the surveyors told us
2019-11-26 07:07:50 PM ahicks there is no on time. they have a certain window from the last time they came to get it done
2019-11-26 07:08:04 PM tjsheerin In all this time I've only ever had one team show up on a Sunday evening - that was fun
2019-11-26 07:08:18 PM kathyhughes I am sure that they want you to figure it out, but I would not worry about it
2019-11-26 07:08:29 PM ahicks is everyone else like my facility...managers must be there
2019-11-26 07:08:35 PM michelep TJ, last year, they came in on a Sunday...fun indeed!
2019-11-26 07:08:40 PM tjsheerin ahicks - they do - however - if they are running behind or running ahead of schedule you'll see them come early in the window or later
2019-11-26 07:08:53 PM monoliver enter the chat room
2019-11-26 07:09:14 PM jklein912 oh yes. we all have bugg out bags just incase survey happens when we arent in building
2019-11-26 07:09:21 PM tjsheerin yes to all management on site for survey no matter when!
2019-11-26 07:09:26 PM ahicks tj...prob so. I just thought later was not an option. I thought they had to get it done within a certain time frame
2019-11-26 07:09:37 PM monoliver HI EVERYONE
2019-11-26 07:09:49 PM kathyhughes Hello
2019-11-26 07:09:52 PM tanya1 hw
2019-11-26 07:09:55 PM tjsheerin they do - 3mo prior to their last survey up to 3 mo after
2019-11-26 07:10:02 PM tanya1 Hello
2019-11-26 07:10:07 PM ahicks yikes..not my first survey but first as manager...nerves here
2019-11-26 07:10:17 PM nmcnutt1 tjsheerin - Im not sure this is my first year in this facility and the window had only been open about a month now. Think we have until Feb. as well
2019-11-26 07:10:18 PM kathyhughes Well ours always came the first snowstorn of the year as we were only 5 blocks from them
2019-11-26 07:10:30 PM tjsheerin LOL there are a TON of facilities in my area - we keep each other informed and follow the survey team and what they are focusing on :o)
2019-11-26 07:10:34 PM spassa my first as a manager also... nervous
2019-11-26 07:10:43 PM jklein912 just do your job. all they can ask is that you do your job correctly no nerves needed
2019-11-26 07:10:48 PM tjsheerin LOL Kathy - they are some pretty smart surveyors!
2019-11-26 07:11:08 PM ahicks if only i was 100 on my job...its so new for me
2019-11-26 07:11:13 PM angelalgreathouse i was very nervous but just focused on my activities and all was good.
2019-11-26 07:11:15 PM tjsheerin spassa - just answer their questions - don't offer any additional info!
2019-11-26 07:11:29 PM jklein912 what she said
2019-11-26 07:11:34 PM michelep The way i see it, the survey process is a good thing, it's for us to correct our mistakes. It's to improve the facility and the care provided...it's a good thing! Bring it on!
2019-11-26 07:11:54 PM splush2402 I am not worried at all. I feel like we have an amazing program and happy residents.
2019-11-26 07:11:56 PM angelalgreathouse I agree
2019-11-26 07:12:06 PM kathyhughes I never was worried and would always have info for them if asked
2019-11-26 07:12:08 PM splush2402 I really don't understand why people get so nervous.
2019-11-26 07:12:08 PM monoliver WE had them a month or so ago...didnt really talk to me much, just asked for my list of 1:1 and resident council notes
2019-11-26 07:12:18 PM kathyhughes Never got upset when they ignored us
2019-11-26 07:12:25 PM tjsheerin Truth!
2019-11-26 07:12:56 PM michelep I work in Social Services, soooooooo, it's more nerve wracking for us! Lol 8-|
2019-11-26 07:12:57 PM splush2402 Surveys are a good thing
2019-11-26 07:13:00 PM kathyhughes Because for some reason some people want to make sure that you are nervous because they doubt what they are doing
2019-11-26 07:13:02 PM spassa are we suppose to have a 1 on 1 list
2019-11-26 07:13:06 PM ahicks i probably woild not be nervous if i have had this seat for a minute now...i just am trying to go through old directors stuff to make sure things are right
2019-11-26 07:13:33 PM kathyhughes You can have one Stacy
2019-11-26 07:13:34 PM angelalgreathouse I was in the middle of doing hand massage on a gentleman and a surveyor asked me for one. i really didnt know what to say to her.
2019-11-26 07:13:35 PM jklein912 yes to the 1-1 list yes so much also documented in their chart for us
2019-11-26 07:14:04 PM splush2402 lol @ angelagreathouse... i hope you said yes.
2019-11-26 07:14:08 PM monoliver They watched me do crafts with the residents and watched to see if I went and let the residents know what events we had going (I didnt realize til later thats what they were doing) but they never said a word and were very nice if they spoke
2019-11-26 07:14:12 PM kathyhughes We kept the 1-1's on their own log
2019-11-26 07:14:13 PM angelalgreathouse yes i sure did.
2019-11-26 07:14:27 PM spassa I do 1on1 when i don't see residents coming to activities . I don't have a list but can give names of few that generally decline activities
2019-11-26 07:14:36 PM ahicks I have been focusing on resident council 1:1 and my sensory program
2019-11-26 07:14:59 PM angelalgreathouse we also keep our 1:1 on a log
2019-11-26 07:15:04 PM joannet yes normally they will ask for 3 months of calendars, participation documentation and your 1-1 documentation
2019-11-26 07:15:12 PM jklein912 our brand policy is pretty strict about 1-1 documentation
2019-11-26 07:15:57 PM monoliver I think as long as they see you are going into rooms with your 1:1 and spending time in the halls talking to residents and your care plans are current everything else is great
2019-11-26 07:16:25 PM ahicks monoliver thank you
2019-11-26 07:16:31 PM kathyhughes We would give them the Resident Council minutes and last 3 months of calendars unless they asked for more
2019-11-26 07:16:31 PM tanya1 I agree
2019-11-26 07:16:36 PM splush2402 I am in AL in Illinois. I do not have a record of 1:1. Yet.
2019-11-26 07:16:36 PM monoliver yw
2019-11-26 07:16:50 PM tanya1 I agree
2019-11-26 07:16:58 PM kathyhughes Do not give them more than what they ask for
2019-11-26 07:16:58 PM monoliver yes i gave them 3 months of everything
2019-11-26 07:17:11 PM ahicks So any new activity ideas anyone
2019-11-26 07:17:22 PM spassa so is your log that you talked to them. I chart task
2019-11-26 07:17:27 PM kathyhughes In 30 years they only asked for participation twice
2019-11-26 07:17:47 PM tjsheerin Wow Kathy, that's lucky!
2019-11-26 07:17:52 PM splush2402 Good to know, kathy. thank you!
2019-11-26 07:18:06 PM joannet sometimes they will ask for life story/history and where is it kept and who can access it
2019-11-26 07:18:09 PM jklein912 our brand dictates a 15 minute visit accomodating their needs
2019-11-26 07:18:13 PM monoliver I have a hard time getting the men active...so I came up with the idea of a nerf deer hunt...I am going to hide deer in the activity room and let them go for a hunt...still working on details of scoring them lol
2019-11-26 07:18:16 PM kathyhughes With the new person centered activities they are looking for activities that your residents suggest or have skills in
2019-11-26 07:18:37 PM tjsheerin monoliver - that's a great idea! I'm stealing!
2019-11-26 07:18:49 PM monoliver lol go for it!!!
2019-11-26 07:19:01 PM monoliver Ill let ya know how it turns out!
2019-11-26 07:19:03 PM tjsheerin thanks!
2019-11-26 07:19:17 PM tjsheerin Also it's an excuse for me to buy nerf guns....
2019-11-26 07:19:24 PM ahicks Awesome monoliver i seen something similiar where they carfted a cardboard box used sticks for antliers amd drew a face on it and nerfed hunting!!
2019-11-26 07:19:31 PM spassa i formed a calendar commitee... i had residents help plan my dec calendar
2019-11-26 07:19:33 PM monoliver lol right! Im hunting with them!
2019-11-26 07:19:39 PM joannet I have a Men's Red Cap Club it's like the Women's Red Hat Club.
2019-11-26 07:19:42 PM kathyhughes So for the new year we need to start looking into getting thte residents invovled in planning their activiites
2019-11-26 07:20:03 PM angelalgreathouse I am going to do a wet tshirt for the gentlmen of the facilty with a twist. using squirt gun with dye to wet the shirt. first one to color t-shirt wins a prize
2019-11-26 07:20:34 PM spassa resident's actually enjoyed planning a calendar
2019-11-26 07:20:43 PM nmcnutt1 This will actually be my first time with state around where they'll actually be watching activities. I know we have our 1:1s recorded, I know we invite many (close to all) residents to each activitiy, and always are using names during.
2019-11-26 07:20:45 PM monoliver I have group social and let them pic what they want to do each day...one resident has a computer he loves to look up ideas and show them, they usually pick our crafts
2019-11-26 07:20:58 PM jklein912 i have commitees established for all of our groups like craft, veteran, socials, and breakfast club
2019-11-26 07:20:59 PM angelalgreathouse we have calendar meeting every onth now and the residents love it.
2019-11-26 07:21:00 PM kathyhughes Yes they do and they have a lot of ideas
2019-11-26 07:21:02 PM tjsheerin On all new admits and quarterly reviews I ask every resident what activities they'd like to see us do in the coming months and then present their ideas for group activities at resident council, and try to work on more variety of 1:1's
2019-11-26 07:21:08 PM ahicks spassa for a 1:1 activity I have the girls take the calandars before hanging them up and go over each day and highlight which activity theyd like to attend. It helps the CNA to know and gets 1:1 done and also lets my girls get to know the residents
2019-11-26 07:21:17 PM tanya1 I,ve been working on a gun range, set up weekly for our men residents. Deer targets, 3 different shooting targets. were using the nerb guns and bows.
2019-11-26 07:21:29 PM nmcnutt1 Resident Council is a great way to get them involved in the calendars too. We always ask them what worked, what didn't, what they want to see more of.
2019-11-26 07:21:37 PM splush2402 I had a Activity Planning meeting, but not many came to it. What other ways could we get the residents involved in planning their activities?
2019-11-26 07:21:45 PM monoliver 1:1 is my most challenging times...I did learn a lot at music & memory yesterday loved that
2019-11-26 07:22:11 PM nmcnutt1 It gives us a good chance to get more from their perspective and we get to share it from ours to about how logistically some things just do not add up for us or are too much
2019-11-26 07:22:29 PM angelalgreathouse we do a weekly cap where we have the reisident tell us what they liked or didnt like about that weeks activities. what we can do to improve them
2019-11-26 07:22:48 PM splush2402 Ohhh... The weekly recap is a good idea
2019-11-26 07:22:56 PM tanya1 Wonderful Idea
2019-11-26 07:22:58 PM monoliver I have decided to start music monday! I told them today and they were shouting songs for me to get together they are suoer excited
2019-11-26 07:23:00 PM jklein912 we do a regular survey during meals
2019-11-26 07:23:05 PM ahicks So my residents always ask for more outings...we go at least once a wk. SUGGESTIONS
2019-11-26 07:23:19 PM joannet in the summer, I bring out the water guns so they can shoot ping pong balls off of golf tees. I had the maintenance director make me a board with holes in it to fit the tees then place ping pong balls on top to shoot at. the residents love it

2019-11-26 07:23:50 PM angelalgreathouse that is cool joannet.
2019-11-26 07:24:10 PM angelalgreathouse i may have to steal that idea
2019-11-26 07:24:10 PM spassa I did my calendar committee at resident council. I laid it down and showed them spots for there particular area of living and they told me what they enjoyed different days and kinda what times they wished to start and end there days
2019-11-26 07:24:16 PM nmcnutt1 Splush2402- This may seem a tad over zealous but I would do an interview with each resident. Ask them what their 3 favorite activities are currently, ask them what activitiy they would like to have, and find out if they would ever want to lead an activity. Some really would step up but not with current tasks or activities.
2019-11-26 07:24:26 PM kathyhughes You can take them to the grocery store, dollar store, thrift shops, museums, theater, restaurants, where ever they would like to do'
2019-11-26 07:24:42 PM splush2402 Thats a great idea. Thank you
2019-11-26 07:24:43 PM joannet @angelagreathouse lol...no problem

2019-11-26 07:25:08 PM angelalgreathouse we did our calendar council today. i totally left chritmas blank and let the residents plan the activies for the day.
2019-11-26 07:25:19 PM nmcnutt1 Taking the time to ask eveyone you could chart all the data and really see what the common activities are what activities may pop up frequently you dont have and you'll most likely identify a few ways to get "not-so-active" people out an about
2019-11-26 07:25:28 PM ahicks NO I mean how do I combat wanting to go so much I have over 100 residents it is not phesable to go that much. only 4 can go
2019-11-26 07:25:37 PM kathyhughes We would go downtown to chase pigeons, take mystery rides, went to the cemetary, and would take them fishing...all their requests
2019-11-26 07:26:20 PM ahicks We do go a lot. And always at resident council its that same group who wants it increased. What should I do
2019-11-26 07:26:25 PM kathyhughes Well then I would limit the outings and bring the community into the facility
2019-11-26 07:26:40 PM tanya1 left the chat room
2019-11-26 07:26:49 PM angelalgreathouse in the summer we do concert in the park weekly and walk or wheel the resident to the city part by way of rail trail.

2019-11-26 07:26:57 PM spassa I do shopping one week, food and dollar store close and me and one other person for like 8 people.... and the following week is lunch
2019-11-26 07:26:58 PM kathyhughes Do you have a community bus company?
2019-11-26 07:27:13 PM monoliver Today I was so touched by one of our residents...I just started the activities program in august and he said Ive been here 5 years, we never did crafts, we colored pics and played cards or puzzles mostly on our own...He keeps track of the activities we do and who attends and said we have done over 40 activites in the last 3 months...He said only 3 of those were a flop lol he said idk if you have noticed but we are resident/ director we have become a family since you came! Just need to share that!

2019-11-26 07:27:32 PM joannet sometimes we did two bus outings/scenic drives in one day so everyone can get a chance to go. I bought hamburger meals for residents who wanted hamburgers and brought them to community and had lunch
2019-11-26 07:27:34 PM ahicks I do that too...we have an outside performer once a week, church volunteers twice a week, pet therapy every two weeks, an inside bingo store once a month
2019-11-26 07:27:58 PM nmcnutt1 ahicks- this is a dilemma I've been facing too. Lots of ideas an opportunties for outings but limited seats. We've been taking two trips for certain things, having people sign up in advance and making sure those who missed out on one week get to go the next, and now are looking at prices to rent another bus
2019-11-26 07:28:00 PM ahicks We have our own van. Two wc and three walkers per trip
2019-11-26 07:28:18 PM kathyhughes I would let the 4 people who want to go out all the time that the first trip is on the facility and the other trips are $???? each time
2019-11-26 07:28:20 PM tjsheerin I work alot with the food service director to do special events for small numbers, and then the residents sign upona rotating bases so its fair
2019-11-26 07:28:28 PM joannet we have a communtity auction...things that are donated by people...like toiletries, socks, clothes, etc.
2019-11-26 07:28:46 PM spassa Is there a stipulation on how many outings you are required... and what time does evening activity start... my facility eats dinner at 4 and my evening activities are 5 but stna's have everyone in nightclothes and bed
2019-11-26 07:28:49 PM angelalgreathouse we have a rotation also for outings.
2019-11-26 07:29:00 PM joannet the residents use their bingo "bucks" for the auction
2019-11-26 07:29:09 PM tjsheerin 4pm dinner seems really early!

2019-11-26 07:29:32 PM splush2402 Majority rules.. I don't feel good about leaving 65 residents behind with no one to facilitate activities while I take 4 out on an outing.

2019-11-26 07:30:00 PM joannet it depends on what your community/company requires. My old company required two outings per week and one community outing/month
2019-11-26 07:30:05 PM kathyhughes We also would have the residents who could, get bus passes from the bus company (they weere free) and they could call a bus when they wanted to go somewhere

2019-11-26 07:30:14 PM ahicks I just can not possibly go more then twice a week. But how do you say that to them? I have explained we need to rotate who goes..but then doing it that way means by time rotation happens again it is 3 months apart

2019-11-26 07:30:37 PM kathyhughes We also contacted the families to let them know that they could take their loved ones out
2019-11-26 07:30:41 PM splush2402 That's exactly how I explain it. I have had issues too. I have a small group of ladies who think shopping every day is activities. They never come to anything else. Just want to shop shop shop
2019-11-26 07:30:54 PM ahicks It is policy that a CNA has to go on every outing...bus will not work
2019-11-26 07:31:11 PM ahicks yes splush exactly
2019-11-26 07:31:26 PM splush2402 Once a week is MORE than enough in my opinion.

2019-11-26 07:31:46 PM splush2402 We go once a week shopping. And 2 times a month out to lunch.

2019-11-26 07:32:50 PM splush2402 I do not have a bus. And we have 65 residents. Just me. It gets pretty stressful for outings.
2019-11-26 07:32:51 PM kathyhughes I just told them it was a policy....
2019-11-26 07:32:51 PM nmcnutt1 THe shopping has been an issue for us as well. Ive been trying to brainstorm that. Nowadays we have access to a large variety of online options. Possibly set up a company amazon account or ebay potentially. THey can shop once a week online as a group.
