2019-11-26 07:33:39 PM nmcnutt1 We have a bus that only fits a max of 9 residents but each "tie-down" takes 2 spots. So it limits us very quickly

2019-11-26 07:34:12 PM kathyhughes You should also contact the families and let them know where their loved one would like to go
2019-11-26 07:34:14 PM michelep i'm reading all these fun outing ideas and i'm sweating bullets, lol. Our facility is anywhere between 45mins and an hour away! gulp!
2019-11-26 07:34:42 PM angelalgreathouse outings can be very stressful for me due to having to share our bus with transporter. so i have to plan around her appointments. sometime it is next to impossible.
2019-11-26 07:34:50 PM splush2402 Yes. Families sometimes forget that they are responsible too
2019-11-26 07:34:51 PM nmcnutt1 I mentioned it before we are looking for rental options but not sure if we will have much success. I know we have the bus line right out front of our building but I feel families and our admin will not like that idea of us promoting it per se
2019-11-26 07:34:55 PM kathyhughes we are about 10 minutes away as we were located in downtown Syracuse,,,,however when out in the winter it may be 1 hour away
2019-11-26 07:35:08 PM ahicks It is almost like highschool lol...they get there group of friends and wanna run...movies..dollar store..out to eat

2019-11-26 07:35:30 PM nmcnutt1 angelagreathouse- same issue with us we have to schedule ours on days their are little to no appointments if ever
2019-11-26 07:35:40 PM nmcnutt1 always run late or cancel too which is awful

2019-11-26 07:35:55 PM michelep i agree, ahicks...but just image US being in their position...i'd like to get out of dodge every now and then! Lol
2019-11-26 07:35:59 PM kathyhughes The worse that could happen is that their battery dies in Walmart on their electric wheel chair

2019-11-26 07:36:38 PM ahicks michelep yes i agree. I do not blame them. But also very hard for me to manage how much
2019-11-26 07:36:51 PM angelalgreathouse I dont have to have a cna unless taking more that 3 due to the fact i still have an active cna license
2019-11-26 07:37:05 PM angelalgreathouse but i would prefer to have one anyways

2019-11-26 07:38:10 PM kathyhughes and I called their floor and he wasn't missed
2019-11-26 07:38:17 PM kathyhughes the nurses heads spun
2019-11-26 07:38:23 PM ahicks kathy what kind of a facility do you work at
2019-11-26 07:38:33 PM kathyhughes skilled nursing
2019-11-26 07:38:35 PM michelep At Res Council last week, one resident requested an outing to go Christmas shopping. Our Activities Director was in the room so i deferred the request to her...she said: "well, we asked you in the summer and you all decided on going to DQ...Michele, i defer back to you." So now i'm like............ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

2019-11-26 07:39:57 PM michelep Yes, that's what i told the residents. My Practicum Advisor and I will work on it tomorrow
2019-11-26 07:39:58 PM angelalgreathouse but they have to sign themselves out. not too many of them do though
2019-11-26 07:40:02 PM ahicks yes we only hav like 2 residents that are their own person

2019-11-26 07:41:17 PM splush2402 What?
2019-11-26 07:41:22 PM angelalgreathouse please share Kathy
2019-11-26 07:41:30 PM kathyhughes The sign ...."This is the residents home"
2019-11-26 07:41:30 PM michelep We had one resident who would sign herself out and go shopping, to the casino, and other events by herself. She'd was an AWESOME shopper, too! She would find extreme sales and would re-sell the items in her "Boutique"...she was great!

2019-11-26 07:42:52 PM kathyhughes Thats what makes me crazy!
2019-11-26 07:42:59 PM tjsheerin safety supersedes rights - unfortunatley
2019-11-26 07:43:11 PM kathyhughes Safety for????
2019-11-26 07:43:19 PM kathyhughes the staff and faciity???
2019-11-26 07:43:21 PM splush2402 That is sad. Fortunately I don't have to witness that much
2019-11-26 07:43:29 PM michelep i agree, Kathy. BUT...you can care plan that the resident has been advised of the risks involved

2019-11-26 07:44:29 PM splush2402 I mean I worry about certain residents going out on their own, but I would NEVER want to take that right away from them. GO be happy and do what you want.
2019-11-26 07:44:32 PM angelalgreathouse Kathy that is very true. never really thought about it like that
2019-11-26 07:44:35 PM kathyhughes I know Michele but if it was really their home they would also interview all the staff, sit in dept head meetings and be in charge

2019-11-26 07:45:29 PM kathyhughes we are too worried about being sued
2019-11-26 07:45:38 PM splush2402 True
2019-11-26 07:45:39 PM angelalgreathouse i agree.
2019-11-26 07:45:48 PM michelep We have two gentlemen that use motorized scooters...they like to go to the "Cenex" (gas station that sells food) but must cross a highway (NOT a major city highway). We have advised them against this but the ombudsman informed us that we really can't do the that, it's their right, even tho' it's a risk...with this one, it can be fatal :(
2019-11-26 07:46:05 PM splush2402 I dont want to live my last years in captivity. NO THANKS
2019-11-26 07:46:06 PM ahicks That makes no sense...if they can not make decisions for themselves then how can we say that
2019-11-26 07:46:29 PM tjsheerin Some do, however as stated before by some of the others in my particular facilities, not many are cognitively intact and have DPOA's and are not ok to go out and about by themselves.
2019-11-26 07:46:37 PM kathyhughes I know we had a store across the street from us and a liquor store in the same block....so they would come and go!
2019-11-26 07:46:51 PM angelalgreathouse michelep i would totally be worried sick if i was in that situation
2019-11-26 07:47:07 PM tjsheerin no booze unless the doctor has written an order for it :o(

2019-11-26 07:47:39 PM michelep Oh my gosh, yes!
2019-11-26 07:47:47 PM nmcnutt1 YEAH that situation is definitely putting you and the facility in a tough spot. Do you think they would go at certain times people were available to accompany them?
2019-11-26 07:47:56 PM kathyhughes And Poa's only control their funds
2019-11-26 07:47:57 PM ahicks Coming and going usually does not qualify as a LTC center qualification. Them residents at that mindset are usually in assited livings
2019-11-26 07:48:20 PM tjsheerin we had MDPOA's in place as well.
2019-11-26 07:48:42 PM kathyhughes No Nicholas...we are not guards...we are to encurage independence
2019-11-26 07:48:50 PM michelep For both our guys, family is aware, they are both their own decision makers. They're in our facility for...............i won't say because of HIPAA :D
2019-11-26 07:49:35 PM kathyhughes I had psych residents, vets and homeless people who all knew the "streets" and the neighborhood
2019-11-26 07:49:52 PM ahicks Residents who are in LTC is because they need that kind of care...unable to make decisions for themselves...unable to care for themselves...safety risks
2019-11-26 07:50:04 PM nmcnutt1 ITs not guarding. It ensuring they're living by the end of the day. Id take the extra 15 minutes after my shift to take them and back if it meant Id get to see them again the next day.
2019-11-26 07:50:48 PM kathyhughes Do your residents get to interview staff?
2019-11-26 07:50:57 PM kathyhughes New Staff
2019-11-26 07:51:09 PM spassa NO
2019-11-26 07:51:12 PM angelalgreathouse No
2019-11-26 07:51:15 PM michelep Also, the ombudsman has been made aware. We cover our butts, lol. Now, our other residents who are not cognitively intact, that's a different story.
2019-11-26 07:51:16 PM nmcnutt1 Im not saying that puppy gaurding is the only option but id try to brainstrom a system to ensure a bit more safety than them just going but if they weren't going to be cooperative or it would infringe their freedoms/indpendence theyd ultimately get to decide
2019-11-26 07:51:22 PM michelep No to Kathy's question
2019-11-26 07:51:23 PM kathyhughes why it is their home
2019-11-26 07:51:59 PM michelep Do residents interview new staff at your facility?
2019-11-26 07:52:04 PM nmcnutt1 We bring in new staff to each resident council but mainly just manager level staff
2019-11-26 07:52:33 PM jklein912 left the chat room
2019-11-26 07:52:33 PM angelalgreathouse I think that would be a good thing for the residents to do Kathy. I will be bringing it up in morning meeting tomorrow.
2019-11-26 07:52:38 PM kathyhughes I would have 3 residents who would also interview activities staff
2019-11-26 07:52:52 PM michelep Our State is suffering enough with LACK OF staff, we basically take what we can get :(
2019-11-26 07:52:57 PM kathyhughes and then one of the DON's I had liked it and would use them as well
2019-11-26 07:53:35 PM ahicks I do not even have three residents at that capacitity to know what a new hire is
2019-11-26 07:53:36 PM nmcnutt1 michelep - are their any safestreet advocates in your community? When I was in Pittsburgh BikePGH and SafeStreets were two groups that had plenty of outreach and advocacy on keeping the roads safer.

2019-11-26 07:54:47 PM kathyhughes Thats too bad that you can't find at lease 1 person
2019-11-26 07:54:49 PM michelep That's interesting....and makes total sense...i mean, staff WILL be taking care of them in more ways than one, why not know who's going to be doing that?nmcnutt1.....my facility is in a town of under 400. So, nope!
2019-11-26 07:55:10 PM nmcnutt1 Again I know its over zealousbut you could reach out to those groups and express concern. They'll look into everything from visualability of the intersection, timing allowed for pedestrian crossing and all. Most cities will provide extra time for crossing at particular intersections frequently used by "vulnerable" populations such as resident facilitesor schools
2019-11-26 07:55:15 PM angelalgreathouse did your residents have a standard list of quwstions they used to interview new staff Kathy
2019-11-26 07:55:40 PM kathyhughes Nope they would have different questions each time

2019-11-26 07:56:27 PM splush2402 I don't have any questions.
2019-11-26 07:56:30 PM spassa I feel if i can't get a new hire to get one resident at a low level to agree to let her work then she really don't need to be there in their home
